This is driving me crazy. I've been with the tech guys at hp for almost 2 hrs now. I just got my dv8 in today.
Here's me deliema, I formatted the laptop to get rid of all the bloat ware and installed a fresh copy of w7 ultimate x64. I installed the IDT audio codec and nvidia audio and video drivers. The sound works fine but for some reason the on screen volume bar is gone. I can increase the sound and watch it increase in the taskbar but the on screen one isn't there, the eject key nor the treble/bass work either.

I've tried everything on my HDX16 to no avail. Same problem here. Quicklaunch and Mediasmart menu ddrivers won't make them work. Any imputs ?
-
Never had a volume bar out of the box on my DV8. Only one i get is if i adjust the bass or treble.
-
Wow, this is a serious issue then. The on screen volume bar worked fine after I took it out of the box. But as soon as I formatted, poof it was gone. This is really annyoing.
-
Havent you made recovery discs before formatting it ?
-
the same thing happened with me on dv6t
to get the on screen bar back u have to install and run any of Hp media smart apps ,,
but in my opinion i prefer to get rid of it ,, when u watch somthing on full screen like youtube videos and u press the volume + or -
it will exit the full screen automaticly ,, thats why i don't like the on screen bar -
I think it cames from the music player from HP. I lost mine screen when i uninstalled it with some of Mediasmart apps.
It is stupid from HP to not put it in Quicklaunch buttons drivers. -

But do you still have access to the bass/treble? IMO that helps the sound on my HDX 18. But I agree the bars are buggy with some programs. Had to take off Nero and my MS BT mouse will not work since there is a conflict with the HP media buttons. -
Here's my solution: install Microsoft IntelliType Pro.

Just select 'Internet Keyboard' and you'll be good to go. A little volume indicator will pop up near the tasktray and it works great for me. -
Did you install Hp quicktouch software?

Also, if it was a driver, then how can non-driver software (Microsoft Intellitype Pro) duplicate it??
Before you wiped the laptop, it had a folder on the C Driver called "SWSETUP". That contained all of the installation files for drivers and software. You should have copied that folder to a backup of some sort before you wiped it. That way, whatever software that was missing, you could have gone into that backup and installed it. Now, your only recourse to get the exact software that worked with your laptop back is to hope that you can find in through the forums, on HP's website, or use your restore discs (if you have them, if not, then you need to order them from HP) to put the laptop back to it's original state and then make a copy of that folder. -
But here's what I can do regarding sound settings:
Initial Settings:
Go to Control Panel, Sound, Speaker + Dual Headphones
Should have green check mark and say: Working
Select: Playback, Recording or Sounds
Double-click for settings, and choose all settings (including Room Enhancements)
Go to Control Panel + open IDT Audio, Playback
Click on: Settings, and choose all settings
Then click on: Setup and choose all settings
To balance speakers
Go to IDT Audio, select Setup
Laptop speakers: Sound, Speaker + Dual Headphones
Should have green check mark and say: Working
Select: Playback, Recording or Sounds
Double-click for settings
Go to Control Panel + open IDT Audio, Playback
Click on: Settings, and choose all settings
Then click on: Setup and choose all settings
Headphone settings:
1. Go to Control Panel + open IDT Audio
Independent Dual Headphones
For Playback
Settings
1. Check: set as default
2. Bass Management have set at the maximum
Optimize Bass Routing have it selected (button turns green)
