i purchased a dv7-1170us about a week ago. love it a lot, would like to preserve its looks more than my prior dated black lenovo i beat around. the machine looks great brand new but is a definite smudge magnet. do any of you that really baby your gear use anything special? i'm planning on ordering some monster screen cleaner and keyboard cleaner by a company called 3m, unless you have better screen/key ideas. i'm sure it's well covered but don't see much about what everyone uses on the other surface areas, the top, trackpad, speaker area. anything special? old t shirt and water?

Don't know to much about screens and special stuff to clean it with though I hear iklean or something like that is good. However, I definitely recommend buying a can of compressed air and spray the air ducts every once in awile. A lot of dust accumulates in there.

For the screen I use window cleaner, Spray lightly onto a cloth not direct to screen, It evaporates without smudging or smearing and does a good job at getting the finger prints off.

For those of you using any type of window cleaner on your screens, that's one of the worst things you can use. It will degrade the screen a lot faster. You should never use anything with ammonia or alcohol.

While there are a lot of different HDTV screen cleaners out there, believe it or not the best I've found is Monster's ScreenClean - like most of them it's formulated for today's monitor screens. What I like about it is that it cleans fast and doesn't leave any smudges or streaks. Having a 20" notebook monitor, I've got a little more screen than most. As a tech and engineer I never recommend anything that Monster sells, except this.

Exterior - IF you can find it, Endust makes an exterior cleaner that's designed specifically for electronic devices. It has one key feature that others don't have - it's Anti-Static. However, it's difficult to find. I recently found 4 cans in an Ace Hardware the other day and bought them all. When I used to service HP systems coming in for repair or maintenance (I used to manage an HP OEM Support Center) I used to use my own formula, mostly water based, to clean the exterior. Some products I used were commercial anti-static HP cleaning products - you can probably still find them if you look online.

Pledge recently released a new all-purpose surface cleaner that's a lot like the Endust formula - anti-static, non-solvent, etc. Though it's labeled for use on glass and windows and monitors and such, I found that it didn't work as well as the Monster formula. The Pledge left streaks and smudges, though small, but there nonetheless. It's only been since the beginning of the year, comes in a blue can just like the Endust cleaner. If you can find the Endust, use it, but the new Pledge stuff worked great for my system's exterior. Not as great on LCD screens, but fantastic on other surfaces.

For those that may disagree about using window cleaners on your monitors, there's a reason your system manual tells you not to use that stuff. But like most people who think they know more than those who build or fix them, I'm sure you'll ignore it since you know more than us stupid professionals.

About once a week, I usually put it into the washing machine. I put in some detergent and some screen cleaner, and then I start the cycle. Just make sure you take out the battery first! :p
