My friend has the white special edition dv6500t with a 12 cells battery. She always complains that the battery lasts a max of 2 hours.

Wow. That can't be right. I get around that much on a hi capacity 6 cell and that is with blue tooth mouse on and WIFI. Somethings wrong with that machine or battery for sure.

To the OP, I don't think there is that much difference between 6 cell and 6 cell hi capacity. If you order with BT and 8400m gs your lucky to get 2 hours. If you order with the integrated graphics x3100 and no BT you might get another 40 to 60 minutes on a six cell. If you get the 8400m gs I highly suggest ordering the 12 cell.
But that is with a dv6500t so I guess that does not answer your question.. Hopefully somebody with a dv6700t can chim in and give you more data.

What you do with your laptop can slash its battery running time by half, or double it. Its really a multi condition analysis.

What are you doing to get 2-2.5 hours on a 12 cell? Even if you were watching DVD movies you should be getting at least 3 hours. With the integrated graphics this does seem strange. I'm thinking there may be something wrong with some of the 12 cell batteries HP is shipping. So let us know what you are doing to get these numbers and what power plan your on EG: power saver, balanced or performance.

My standard 6-cell lasts under an hour in my dv6400 with wireless on and using the "Balanced" power setting. It has been this way since new, and my older v5201 gets similar times (both are AMD units).

On the flipside, I've seen a high-cap 6-cell get 3 hours on an Intel unit at similar settings. Go figure.........

Well its generally known that AMD can take more power and run hotter then the intels. Thats a huge difference though.

I have a dv6700t with a Penryn processor and my 6-cell battery lasts about 3+ hours, that's with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on, using Firefox and several applications. The 12-cell battery last about 5 hours, but never more than 6.

On my dv6000z (Turion 64 X2 TL-58, 256 MB GeForce go 7200, 2 GB RAM), the battery typically lasts about 2 to 2.5 hours on the standard battery (6- or 8-cell, I can't remember). This is with the screen brightness all the way to low and the volume muted and wireless LAN on...

Yikes. You and I have the same unit and your battery lasts double of mine. I wonder if environmental conditions affect battery life, as my computer room is always rather warm.

Personally, I think the wide ranges of battery time are differences in quality in the batteries themselves. On my last laptop I never got very decent battery life and when I bought a third party battery it lasted twice as long. I'm about to buy a 12 cell battery for my dv6500t and it won't be from HP.

You also have to consider the battery management you are using.
This can make a big difference

Battery 6 Cell - HP Part #441243-141 10.8v 55WH printed on battery (as received with new notebook. High Capacity 6 cell?).

OK, I did a more detailed test today while at the coffee shop. With WiFi on continuously my activities included web surfing (actually reading the Vista Tweaks on this forum), some Microsoft Word activity, creating PDF documents of some of the Vista Tweaks for future reference a bit of Excel work and trying a couple of the Vista tweaks reordering the bootfiles and some defrag. My 6 cell battery lasted 3 hours 8 minutes from fully charged before leaving the house to the 5 percent battery warning.

Power level was balanced with brightness adjusted to about 40%.

Does a 6 cell high capacity battery stick out from the case like the 12 cell?

I got a replacement for my Toshiba from these guys: http://www.laptopsforless.com/

That battery pretty much doubled the life from the tosiba satelite I have. I don't know if they sell one for the dv6500t. They list one for the dv6000 compaq. I have seen third party batteries for the dv6500t but have not saved the links. Just be careful.. don't buy refurbished and many of the third party suppliers guarantee them or you can return for 100 refund. Those are the sites you want to use for batteries. My friends have also told me that factory batteries oftentimes are crap. Also look at the capacity hours on these batteries since many carry more capacity on standard 6 and 12 cell. They are usually cheaper then what HP would charge as well.

I get more or less the same battery life on my AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-56 (1.8GHz) HP Pavilion with a new 6 cell.

Age and wear will diminish the capacity of the battery.

R4000 don't buy a third party battery, use eBay and buy an original battery. Original batteries last more and have less defects. You can get a battery on eBay for the price of a third party battery. Thanks Ivan

One parameter that many people don't know about is that you can change the output power of your WiFi card. It is in the advanced power settings. If you are fairly close to your router, you don't need as much power and can turn it down to save battery in your power saver battery profile.

Remember that HP doesn't make their batteries but uses a subcontractor. When you order a third party battery, you may be getting one from a wholesaler who is reselling a battery that uses the same internals as the HP one. There are bad batteries out there that have caused problems, but just because a battery is a no-name one doesn't necessarily make it bad. It may be as good or even better than an HP one. The trick is to know which ones are the good ones (also beware of fake HP ones!).
