Sounds like wonderful HP "service." Corporate customer service is all but dead in the U.S.

Why am I not surprised at the slow response from HP. Ever since the merger, HP has continually retrenched US tech specialists, hire cheaper non-technical reps as "case managers" and off-shored first level support to their "global remote support operations", i.e. the formal HP term for off-shore, cheap call centres.

I can assure you that there are no technically-capable case managers within HP corporate, which is what makes the entire refund episodes like this or other tech issues a pain at times. However, the good thing is these non-tech personnel won't know the actual value of the OEM Vista and will just issue a refund for whatever the amount is claimed to be.

Does anybody know the OEM value of vista...I'm probably going to try this with dell (Or, my friend rather), because He'd already planned on putting xp on his next laptop for college. Planning to buy in the next month. If theres an estimate somewhere, that would make things easier to speculate (if the stress is worth it)

The service is fine normally, just don't overwhelm them with technical details. As I said, there are no technical specialists within their PSG consumer support.

So basically, I could refuse to activate their $200 oem vista and their bloatwares, demand for refund, and then order an oem vista from places like newegg for half the price. Sound about right?

i already have vista ultimate discs and licence from one of microsoft's programs. i am wondering if this actually words because I don't want to use the vista home premium coming with my new laptop anyway.

if there is a quick way to deal with this I'd love $200 off...
