I have a compaq presario c500 that was running vista basic, I chosed to install ubuntu 6.06lts on it. how do I on boot access the hp recovery drive? b4 the Ubuntu install I think a button could be pressed on boot to access the hp reovery screen, that contains windows vista installation disk. Also can not access windows it just hangs on the logo screen. In saying that I dont think windows has been missed much. Many thanks.. I hope i make some sence.

By default, the GRUB bootloader would have recognised your HP recovery partition during installation, so if you see 2 entries for Windows in your GRUB menu (assuming you hadn't chosen to wipe out your hard disk during install), the 2nd one would bring you to the recovery loader.

I dont have disc's.. at the local lug windows was put onto the grub for me, as it was missing from the grub menu. I loaded the laptop with Ubuntu 7.04 and found that both windows drives. Recovery and windows its self was still accesable. So I assume the drive is not damaged. (i hope posting here can help some one in the future also find this thread and fix their issues)
