I'm looking to replace my hdd. Question is will the drop protection software that parks the drive's head work with any hdd or only specific ones?

    Thanks.

In my experience this has been the flakiest piece of software that HP supports. I've had problems where upgrading from Vista 32-bit to Vista 64-bit (using the OEM hard drive), the software would no longer recognize it as a supported drive, and that was using the 64-bit version of the 3D Drive guard forum.

The software seems to have gotten a little better with Windows 7 though. My 8510p came preinstalled with a 160gb seagate, and swapped it out for a 250gb western digital and 3D drive guard works no problem.

But again, I think it will go back to how temperamental the software is (from my experience).

Thanks. I think I'll go with a 500GB Scorpio Blue. Should be plenty of space and I can use the old one as an external.
