Hi, I recently got a hp 6885se (labeled on the box has dv6000) with hdmi out. However I can't pass the audio signal from my TV to my stereo via the hdmi out on the notebook. Is there a way I can get spdif out from one of the headphone jacks. From what I read the dv6000 specs say it can do that, however I can't get any sound out of it when sending to my coax spdif to the stereo from the headphone jacks. I tried both as well, no go. Anyone know if this model even has that feature of spdif on the headphone jacks?

Yes it does. The right jack is a SPDIF out and also a extra headphone jack. You will need to enable SPDIF first on your sound playback settings

I don't see any option in the control panel. The only way I can even get hdmi sound is to disable the speakers and set the digital device as the default, then restart the quickplay program. However nothing on the spdif out from the 2nd headphone jack. Should there be another option in the quickplay program (this is vista home premium).

Hi there, I have also just purchased new HP dv6823TX. Vista home prem. and am having exactly the same issue. Docs that came with laptop state to make changes in Sound (in control panel) but as rvanderwerf states there is no setting for this??
Would love some advice/help!!!!

Same problem here but with hp 9880. Have tried both coaxial and optical from headphone 2 but no luck. I think it's only possible to get digital audio from the hdmi output.
I saw a screenshot on a HP pavilion (other model) and right beside head phone 2 there was a text spdif. It does not look like that on my, I only have a headphone symbol. -
yeah my 6885 doesn't have any icon indicating headphone 2 is a digital output nor do the docs for this say it has this. I was hoping it was an undocumented feature, but I guess it's not there. So it seems like the only other solution if you want HDMI for video only and a separate digital sound output is to get a USB or PCMCIA sound card with one, or maybe there is a docking station with a digital out? (sound card seems cheapest)

the port replicators go for cheap on ebay (50-60$), although I have no idea how this would affect HDMI out operation:

apparently it has a SPDIF out on it as well.
update: found it http://stores.channeladvisor.com/inandoutcomputers/items/item.aspx?itemid=386988 here for $35 + 7.99 ship -
The QuickDock does indeed have S/PDIF out. I've tested mine with HDMI and S/PDIF on the QuickDock enabled and a signal is sent from both.

wow. I haven't posted here in a while, but on my laptop, this is how I get spdif to work (2nd Headjack).
Right click on the sound icon on the taskbar and choose playback devices. On my laptop, It shows 2 icons: Speakers and SPDIF Interface. If yours doesn't show the SPDIF icon, then try updating your drivers, if not, then I don't know. But if the SPDIF icon shows, click on the icon and click the SET DEFAULT button. Then from there, you can click properties and change the settings. Hopefully this will work. -
I just bought a HP Notebook quickdock as suggested earlier in this thread and I can confirm that SPDIF works on that docking solution. Now I get Dolby 5.1 and DTS for my movies. Yey! I was a bit worried I had to buy a new receiver with HDMI in to get surround sound of my computer.

Mine doesn't have a spdif icon, but has 2 options, 1 is the speakers and one is the digital playback device. I have to actually disable the speakers, then set digital to default to get any digital audio via hdmi (then restart quickplay) - but nothing on the 2nd headphone jack for me. I ordered the quickdock for 42 shipped from the second link I mentioned, sounds promising from other's posts here. It'd be nice if digital out just worked from the headphone jack for me, but I guess the 6885se (got it from best buy, copper color) doesn't have it for some reason. -
I can confirm that updating driver from HP site does give the SPDIF option when laptop is rebooted, if option was not there previously. However I guess I will be looking for Quickdock option.
Can anyone give advice as to where to purchase from??
Thanks
hp 6885se w/hdmi - does it have a spdif output on 2nd headphone jack?
