    Hello everyone,
I just bought a new dv2700 with 1GB of ddr2 ram pc2-5300 (1x dimm). I have an extra stick of 512mb ddr2 pc2-4200 ram. Can I safely add it to the notebook? The Crucial memory advisor says the notebook can take pc2-5300 and pc2-6400 memory. Nevertheless, it mentions nothing about pc2-4200. Experts, please advise ;)
    thanks,
    totono

Yes, but then both sticks will be running at 533.

    thanks,
so is it better to have 1gb at 667 mhz or 1.5gb at 533 mhz?

For Vista, get 2 GB. It won't cost very much at all. Check the ram deals.

Also, if you didn't already know, all HP laptops only have 2 slot for RAM. If the laptop came with 1GB it has 2x512MB sticks (same thing for all different variations). They always put in two sticks of RAM.

As Lithus states, with Vista you need at least 2GB of RAM. So just go out and spend $40, yeah that's all a 2GB stick of RAM costs nowadays, and you'll have 2.5GB.

Also, it might be good for you to know, that you won't be able to run dual channel, but the performance hit is negligible.

thanks for all the recommendations. however, all i wanted to know is wheather a problem would be created by putting a slower ram (p2-4200) instead of the speeds recommened by crucial.com (pc2-5300 or pc2-6400)? I'm deducing not...?

xcan, i was just reading about that.
so do we all agree that 1.5 gb(single channel) @ 533mhz is better than 1.0gb (dual) @ 667 mhz?
