Well i have left it on overnight (about 12 hours) and still at around 35C. It might be good to let you know that i am also using a notebook cooler but without the cooler my HDD idles around 38C so not much difference.

FWIW, HP's 14" models were known to have hotter than normal running HDD's. I have seen people complain about high temps w.r.t the HDD couple of years ago as well.

Yeah but it cant be compared to the dv5 or the dv7 since they have completely different cooling systems. As far yours does it stay constant at 55C all the time. have you seen it after a cold boot? Maybe the program you are using to monitor the temps is not reading the temps accurately.

Guess it depends on which machine you have... different models have different cooling systems... if I start playing games, the entire machine will heat up, so the HD will also run slightly hotter...

really i dont know, but i think this is not normal, really, all my notebooks what i have the hd always works ok bettwen 35 and 41, not more, i had a pavilion dv6645us and the temperature works bettwen 35 and 41, not more, and the same with a dell xps 1530, i think its a problem of hard disks

After a stint of intense gaming the dv5t is roasting so it makes sense that the hdd temp goes up a bit. I don't think it's anything to get alarmed about. 54 deg C seems pretty inconsequential not that I know much about hdd temps. My laptop is functioning as it was designed so nothing to worry about I reckon.

i understand the 54c because you have an intense gaming time, but i cant understand 54C only on idle mode or surf on internet, thats terrible
last week, only in idle mode i have 54C

I'm using HWMonitor, and it does not show my hd temp. However, I am concerned about the temps it does show (THRM? and processor).

My dv5 used to run at an average of 80C, and saw temps as high as 95C while streaming video. I sent it in for repairs and the temps have since dropped, but still seem high (Currently 50C, high of 86C while streaming video). Should I send it back for repair- again??

    95ºC?
its to much, i think this is not normal
for example, if you check the performance about dell xps 1330
its 13", smaller than hp dv4
    and the hd works ok,
xps 1330 has higher temperature than dv4,

Right now I have uTor running, set to space out HDD writes (5MB or something) and I'm not downloading very fast.
I'm running FF with like 8 tabs, and Vista 64.
    I have a DV4-1220US with a AMD Turion 2.1 proc.
Nothing else should be using the HDD, and I have 4 gigs of ram to use.
Right now it says the HDD is at 53c, with the CPU underclocked to 75% max, that also is at 60.

The fans are all unblocked (laptop is on my right leg and the whole left side is exposed to air and friggin hot. The right side is ice cold.)

Yesterday when I was doing nothing else but streaming video from mtv.com, the HDD was somewhere over 60 (I didnt pay attention)--because the CPU was at a high of 108 degrees. EVEN when the video was paused, and the pc was otherwise idle for 30 minutes.
I flipped it upsidedown, propped the lid open with something small, and set it on the floor and after 20 mins the temps were still over 80celsius somehow.

I just don't understand how it gets so hot.

I made a new power profile with the CPU @ 75% which helps with temps a ton, the power saver setting is impossible to use with vista atleast (it puts the cpu to like 1 GHz)

I don't know why a dual core CPU, with hyperthreading, running at 1GHz, is barely able to run firefox with 4 gigs of ram in vista. That's like 4 cores.
