I have a 12 cell battery and only get 3 hours and 30 minutes on a full charge. All I am doing is a few desktop applications and surfing the net. Does anybody else have the same battery life. Hp spec. says 5 hours and 48 minutes :D

Seems that manufacturer's specs for battery life are always very optimistic, which I guess is to be expected since they are trying to push product and naturally want to present it in the best light. They probably base those figures on best case scenario with the notebook running on very low screen brightness and sitting there practically doing nothing until the battery conks out. Could have something to do with your power settings as well, but I'm just speculating since I don't own a DV5000 (yet).

Is power management enabled? Does MobileMeter show your CPU speed switching between 800MHz and full speed?

Either your power management is disabled or something keeps the CPU at 100% all the time. Try mobile meter or cpuz to check at what speeds the laptop operates. It should be at around 800mhz 99% of the time for basic usage.
