My dv6000's battery has died: it never fully charges up anymore, and instantly runs out of juice when called upon to do its duty. Running HP's hardware checker on it yielded this diagnosis:
    Code:
A bad battery has been detected, the battery needs to be replaced. (Battery diagnostic)
Called HP tech support just now. They claimed that now that my laptop is out of warranty, anything that goes wrong is no longer covered. Even worse, since batteries are considered consumable items by them, they would never have covered a dead battery anyways. Even more shocking, he said that he was surprised that my battery lasted as long as it did (~2 years); he said that HP's batteries are only designed to work for one year!

Is this correct? Is everyone else's HP batteries dying after about a year? Whatever happened to parts lasting for the lifetime of your machine?

Since HP put out a crap component and won't support it, the last thing that I want to do is buy an expensive replacement from them.

Therefore, what recommendations do you you guys have for a high quality replacement battery for an HP dv6000? Both manufacturer and model number and online store that can buy it at.

    Thanks for your response.

The rep claimed 1 year, not 2-3, so it looks like mine lasted an average amount of time.

The link you gave is interesting. I always left my battery inside my laptop, and rarely drew on it, relying mainly on AC power, but according to the link, maybe I should have pulled my battery out when not in use? Do you guys do this?

Anyone have any recs for good replacement batteries?

    hp reps are idiots

Batterys can last more than 3 years. Maybe after 1 year they start to badly deteriorate. My presario is over 3 years old and it can hold an charge for 1.5hrs on full brightness and Wifi. The acer notebook i used for work is about 2 years old and lasts about the same

I usually take the battery out when i dont use it

It was very informative and well written.

Main quibble that I have with it is that they do not quantify how much benefit you get from pulling out the battery when connected to ac power; does it increase your battery's life by 50% or 5%? If the latter, I say leave it in, because then you get a UPS like benefit. But a 50% increase in life might make the hassle worth it.

BTW, HP wants a ripoff $130 to replace this battery. Can find other online suppliers thru amazon that will sell it for under $60:
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...p_0/105-6985888-5401220?ie=UTF8&condition=all

Anyone have any experience with third party suppliers like these? The battery guide claims that there can be issues, altho one of the companies in the url above claims that it "Meet or Exceed Original Specifications". Hmm...

Get the numbers from the battery and look on ebay for it. You'll find new ones on there that are cheaper than ordering through HP.

Your battery is going to degrade over time whether you kept it inside or leave it out. There are some ideal conditions where the battery can be stored at but honestly I would suggest people use it even if the laptop spends most of the time connected to the power source. On my older system I left my battery in and used it everyday and it still works even after two years. Ofourse it doesnt hold as much charge as it first did but unfortunately thats the nature of Li ion batteries.

As far as third party replacement are concerned, I would urge caution since you really dont know whether these battries are even safe, if you buy a HP branded replacement you will atleast know that it to a certain extent can be trusted.

Yea eBay is the way to go, I bought two extra batteries for my hp dv6700t , one was a used 6 cell the other was a new 12 cell for a total of $70. Thats like two batteries for half the price of a new one.

I went ahead and bought mine new from one of Amazon's resellers for about $60. The reseller claims that it "meets or exceeds HP's specs". Time will tell. However, given the total crap that HP disgracefully sells, this would be a low hurdle to clear...
