system running quite slowly, did a recovery and still same problem

is there a free program to run, i use pc-doctor on my thinkpad but unfortunately there is no download on their site, to scan the machine to see if there are any hardware problems?

if not then will think about replacing hard drive and adding more ram i guess, just want to make sure nothing really wrong with machine before doing that

Memtest86 for memory, CHKDSK or DFT for HDDs.
