i just bought hp dv8t quad laptop recently. the first time i turned on, treble bar (blue horizontal bar to adust treble that is supposed to appear only when i touch that touch tone above keyboard) came up on middle of screen intermittently. everytime i run other application, this bar would come up and stops other application. i spent over 1 hr with hp tech to fix it. now everytime i turn on, this blue bar still comes up but after i adjust treble via tone control above keyboard, it disappears. tech says there is no hardware defect, but i am wondering if others are like this. thanks.

Do a clean install of Windows 7, then install HP Tone Controls and it will go away.

I just got a dv8t and had the same problem. The HP tech upgraded the BIOS (which is on the HP web site) and that took care of the problem. But now the fan is always running at a high speed. I am trying to get that resolved or I will ask HP to replace the unit with a new one. This is discussed at some length on the HP support user's forum.

My new dv8 is doing the same thing. It can stay hours without doing it and then it starts again. I had a previous dv7 that was doing the same too, although hat was eventually fixed by itself. (Now that I think about it, it may have been after I updated the BIOS)

You are saying that it's discussed on the HP forum. Can you give me a link?

I downloaded the BIOS update from the HP site, but I am hesitating to install it because of the fan running at a high speed that you mentioned.

Below I have put in the link to the HP user forum where owners of dv8t's have had the same problem, as I did.

I called HP tech support about the treble/bass indicator popping up on the screen. I guess I got a good guy, because he spent about 45 minutes and solved the problem.

He installed the new BIOS upgrade.

As for the fan running, I was able to fix that this morning, using the info I found from other owners on the hp owner support forum (link below).

When you go there, read down towards the bottom of the first page and DONT do what the first 3-4 people say. I followed the tip to go into the BIOS set-up at start-up (hit escape key), etc., and told the BIOS start up to load the set-up defaults. I followed the entry by "Littlewave" Brian. That took care of my fan problem and I have had no other problems so far today. It sure seems like a great PC with a big, full HD screen. I plan to continue to "kick the tires" before my deadline to return the thing to HP ends on January 14th. Other than the treble/bass problem and the fan speed (hopefully both resolved), I love the PC.

By the way, some people have reported problems with syncing an Ipod touch with the dv8t. I use the USB port on the right side, nearest to the front of the laptop, and have no problems using itunes and syncing my ipod touch (I did NOT try to do this before the BIOS upgrade).

    Hope this helps.

Nope, that didn't work for me. In addition, I now get the fan running sporadically when it didn't (unless it was very hot) before.

And as I suspected, a "clean" install does not solve all. In Rather, it just trades one issue, for another.

Incidentally, I uninstalled my tone controls OP.

I had the same problem with my DV8T the F12 firmware fixed the tone control problem but like you said the fan is on all the time now. I accidently found a workaround for this, If you put the computer to sleep and then wake it up the fan works perfectly. However you have to do this every time you boot the computer. So they still have to fix this.
