What are you going to do with it?
-
Same question, what do you intend to use it for and how much are you paying for it?
-
I intend on using it mostly for internet browsing, word doc(college), and of course music(alot) and making Power Hour DVD's.

I regret buying the DV9207us because I carry it around and the short battery life defeats the purpose of using a portable laptop. If you want top performance and are willing to spend that kind of money, you can do much better than the Geforce 7600. HP laptops are like Vista. They look pretty, but there is not much underneath the skin. Besides, you will be just another guy with an HP laptop. For that kind of money, buy something different and unique -- something few people have. Better yet, wait for this santa rosa thing.

Well for what he is wanting the laptop for, there is no mention of gaming so it doesnt matter if he got the go7600 or better. of course if you do go for a better laptop with a better video card then it won't be very portable since the battery life will be worse.
the problem with unique and different is that although no1 will have the model, it will just look like a normal laptop. there are the lesser known laptop makers like Compal, clevo, everex, sager, etc.... but their laptops are only unique on the inside, on the out most are just your average looking lappy.
but also the HP dv9000 series wasnt really designed to be portable, 17" laptops are meant to be desktop replacements and battery life on screens that big won't get any better whatever model you choose. -
For what he needs it for, I would get a dv6000 or better yet dv2000 for portability, specially carrying it around campus. I love my dv2000 with 12cell battery. Just weight right for portability and I use it exactly what he needs it for. I got mine with below specs for less than $1800 with Microsoft Office 2007 Pro.

Weight and size aren't really a problem for me...Im living in an off campus house and it will mostly be used as my desktop replacement. Im really in love with the dual hard drives. But im also worried bout is HP a P.O.S? My g/f owns one and I go on it alot, its ok(i think it's an older one) and its LOUD. I dont really game too much..not at all on the comp. Im a PS3 guy. But i'm kinda wondering if the HP's are bad laptops.. Also are they easily upgradable?

Seems like you are paying too much. I just got a dv9000t (T7200, WSXVGA+, 512mb, 160gb drive, lightscribe cd/dvd drive, webcame, bluetooth, wireless, nvidia 7600 with 256mb, high capacity 8 cell battery) for $1235 shipped. It was $1435 and I used the $200 off coupon. I pulled the 512mb stick and installed 2gb of G.Skill DDR2 PC5300 which was only $100 shipped from Newegg. So my total cost with 2gb RAM was $1235. For that amount, it is an awesome notebook. The screen is good and there are no dead pixels. Quality control overall seems excellent. Battery life is over three hours in power saver mode using wireless internet; obviously if you keep the display at maximum brightness and play games it will be a lot less. It does fall into the desktop replacement category but it is one of the lighter 17" notebooks, and the 90w power brick is compact and light.
Your choice of bag will make a big difference in what you consider portable. I bought a McKlein Chicago bag which is awesome. It was only $128 at Ebags using an online price search, and comes with a detachable wheeled base and a briefcase which can hold a 15.4" notebook or a bunch of files. Also it can hold some snacks, change of clothes, etc. It looks much more expensive than it was.
I agree with other posters that if you are paying around $2k there are better choices, for instance the Clevo M570U. Both the notebook and power brick are a bit larger and heavier compared to the HP, but probably not enough to make much of a difference carrying it around with a bag or backpack It has the 7950GTX which is much, much faster than the 7600. Great for games, but it will also drain the battery a lot faster! The HP business notebook nw9440 may be worth a look too, as it adds a fingerprinter reader and the workstation version of the 7900GS card which is in between the 7600 and 7950GTX in performance. Decent battery life too. It will definitely be a bit over $2k though. Same size and weight as the dv9000t, I think, but less flashy.
If you want something light with long battery life, and don't care about the flashy looks, some of the Thinkpads are pretty sweet and there are decent deals out there. That's what I would buy if my primary goal was portability and long battery life. There is already some info on the Santa Rosa versions on these forums, though likely there won't be great deals on them anytime soon. -
Something like the HP nx9420 might be worth a look. It is a business class notebook which will offer better quality and support. It only has one hard drive, but an external is an option if you aren't moving it much.

If you must have an HP 17'' laptop, get the DV9207us. It is still on sale at Compusa for $800 after e-rebate and MIR. With this laptop, you get the best GPU HP offers. You still have $1200 left to buy a next-generation 14'' laptop.
