I'm looking for a good, quality laptop that had plenty of storage, fast and a great multitasker. I will basically be using the laptop as a desktop replacement for college. I want a 17 inch screen with great picture. I will be using the notebooks for essay's, song/video dl's and some dvd making. I like the hp because of the Dual Hard Drives, but if I go with the dell, I guess I could just go with an external Hard Drive. Here are the specs for both(HP & Dell):

    HP dv9000t: US $1,849.99
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
    – Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo T7200 (2.0GHz/4MB L2Cache)
    – 17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050)
    – 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600
    – FREE Upgrade: HP Imprint Finish/Microphone/Webcam
    – 40% off upgrade from 1GB (2 Dimm) to 2GB (2 Dimm)!
    – 200GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (100GB x 2)
    – FREE Upgrade - LightScribe DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer
    – Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
    – No TV Tuner w/remote control
    – 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
    – Microsoft(R) Works 8.0
    – HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

Without the nVidia Geforce Go 7900 GS, the Dell Inspiron E1705 is only an average laptop. Filling out a FAQ will help NBR members give you advice if you need the more powerful video card.

hmmm i dont see anything on the Dell that make it better than the HP?

the HP has two 100gb 7200rpm drives, dell only has one

HP has a go7600 dedicated 256MB, Dell as an Intel GMA which is useless for games and takes some RAM from your system (giving you less than 2GB)

    HP has a bigger battery

for $100 more you seem to get a better deal with HP

just make sure you either upgrade to 2GB later or get a 2GB configuration for Vista.

Simply put the HP sounds alot better

Every commercial laptop whether it be HP, Dell, toshiba, sony, Lenovo or LG will have "crap-ware" so it wont matter which laptop he gets in this case.

If you're not gaming, the HP Pavilion dv9000t would be a good choice. Another option is the 17 inch Fujitsu N6420, available with dual hard drives.

well since you are "only" paying one hundred more for the hp I would have to recommend the hp. Because with the hp you are getting: a vastly superior graphics card, 200 GB of internal storage (in my opinion, having 100GB internal and then 80 external and having to drag another accessory around would be annoying), a bigger battery, lightscribe enabled drive (which may not mean anything to you but it can be a neat toy to play with), and what is, in my biased opinion, a much more attractive looking laptop than the dell.

Also after comparing my HP dv6000t with my friend's E1505, I can say that the hp is definitely built better. For example, when I lift my computer from the corner it flexes slightly and you can hear some creaking sounds. But with my friend's e1505 you can feel and see a noticeable flex along with horrible creaking and cracking sounds.

ALSO if you are a college student don't forget to sign up for HP's APP discount. It will give you something like 5 or 6 percent off which for me payed for the sales tax.

    This I 100% agree with.

The Dell's look so "old" & "plain" & do not have a numeric keypad with all that real estate.

IMO the HP notebooks look MUCH better than all the competition with Acer & Sony (way overpriced) coming in as a tie for 2nd in the looks dept.

Far as specs, what one notebook has the other doesn't & vice versa so it's kind of a trade off when trying to find the "right" notebook.

hmmm why wud u have wanted an alienware laptop if u werent gonna ever play games on it? Those are kinda designed for that i reckon.

In any case whether u play games or not, if those were ur two best choices the HP still holds strong.

Tnaks for the Help! Couple last questions...Bloat ware and quality. I am able to get rid of bloat ware myself when the comp is shipped right? And how is the build of HP's? Do they feel cheap, or flimsy or nething? And how easily is it upgradable?(would I be able to install new things myself -i.e. memory, hard drive etc.)

both sticks of memory are accessible by a screws and a panel on the bottom of the laptop, same for the two drives and the optical drive is removable by a screw. very easy to get at.

build quality is very good compared to other brands of the same range and i dont think it feels cheap at all, though not as sophisticated as their business range.

For me the lack of a 1Gig NIC card on the Dell would also be an issue

O yea one quick question...For downloading songs, is SATA ok? I've seen some testimonials that say to go for RAID(0,1 etc.)

Also, will the hard drives(200gb-'100gbx2'-7200rpm) be hot and loud?

Definitely go with the HP! They look really good and they're much more reliable then Dell computers in my opinion. The Dells don't have very good design either (but that's subjective).

even with the new specs for the dell I would definitely recommend the HP since the prices (before taxes) are basically equal and the HP beats the dell in: looks, graphical horsepower (7600 still better than the x1400), HDD capacity, and build quality.

Uh, apply a better coupon. One of those 400$ off $1499+ system coupons. I got the inspiron in my sig, WITH the 7900 GS and a T7200, for around $1500. I don't mean to say that HP is bad, I have a HP dv8000t after all, but if you use the right coupon, Dell is much better bang for your buck.

HP does give you 2 harddrives and much better looks. Build quality is kind of subjective. I don't own a 9000t but my 8000t feels about the same quality wise as my E1705. But a 7900 GS is an insane overclocker, and even stock it will smoke a go 7600.
