okies, so i got my dv9000t preloaded w/ xp and made my recovery discs. I then got my vista discs and upgraded to vista. i installed ubuntu a little while ago to dual boot vista and ubuntu. then i decided i missed fear too much so i've backed up all my data, did a full hard drive reformat and installed xp again using my recovery discs.

now, xp worked perfectly fine at the beginning. i installed all the updates, got steam and fear. well, when i open up counter-strike 1.6 it crashes about 90 percent of the time. counter strike source gives me like one frame every 6 seconds and fear gives me about one frame every 10 seconds. On xp, i used to get easily 200fps in 1.6, 70+ in source w/ full graphics, and decent fps in fear. what's wrong!?

I have a feeling it's the sound card because 1.6 seems to freeze whenever i do something that requires sound e.i. clicking on "servers" (it makes a little clicking sound and then freezes up).

I've ran the HP help and support "troubleshoot a problem" and "install new drivers." I reinstalled xp yesterday and ran all the updates before getting anything else, but it still doesn't work. HP says i have all the newest drivers (including for my sound card) and i've tried both the built in nvidia driver and a 95.77 (off the top of my head) nvidia driver.

When watching a video off of youtube, i get like 1 fps and the sound stops every couple of seconds. has anyone had this problem before? it's really odd.

well if u reinstalled XP again (format not just over the old one) then it sounds like some hardware issue. have you checked the temps of the laptop, cpu, hard drive, graphics card. also is nvidia powermizer setup right? have u checked what your CPU speed is?

my temps are fine. I got an external fan a while ago so my comp is actually cool to touch most of the time. Powermizer is set up right so that's not an issue and besides, it wouldn't cause that big of a problem.

yes i did a complete xp install w/ format.

according to the System properties, all my stats are right (1.66 ghz, 1 gb ram etc)

and i don't think it's a hardware problem b/c on linux cs 1.6 (like a week ago before reinstalling xp) i would get 100+ fps under wine.
