So i decided to semi-retire my 3 year old zd8000 and purchased a new notebook. I have a question but first let me give you the specs![]()
*HP Pavilion dv9700t series
*Vista Home Premium (got this since i plan to downgrade to XP Pro, i run cad software that is not supported in vista yet)
*Core 2 Duo Processor T7500 (i opted for the T9300 2.50gzh, because the battery consumption between both could be up to 45min - According to benchmark tests and HP themselves)
*17.0" WSXGA (1680 x 1050)
*2GB DDR2 System Memory (question about this below)
*512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
*HP Imprint Finish (Radiance) + Fingerprint Reader + Webcam + Microphone
*Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 4965AGN Network Connection and Bluetooth
*240GB 7200RPM SATA Dual Hard Drive (120GB x 2) (too bad cant run raid)
*LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW
*HP xb3000 Notebook Expansion Base
*High Capacity 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
So now the questions.
I was going to purchase the 4gig ram through HP, but decided to save a few bucks by purchasing it elsewhere.
Here's what i have in mind

To save time for the forum trolls, i'll beat you to it and mention what you will say.
1.) the dv9700t will downclock it to DDR2 667
2.) 32bit systems will only read 3gb memory
3.) its not worth getting because of reason 1 and 2.
try not to answer this post with these 3 so we do not make a long unanswered thread
Now, i want to get a good memory, in an event that i somehow purchased another noteboook down the line. Would this memory be compatible or would it give me issues? I looked everywhere (probably not hard enough) but please provide some insight.
thank you.

Yes the DV9700T will downclock the ram to 667 and the 32 bit vista only reads 3 gb of ram.

My question is different
Will that memory posted above work on dv9700t? will it give me issues? has someone upgraded their dv9700t with his type of ram or similar
can someone who know's confirm? -
I have 2 gigs on my laptop and 3 gigs on my similar spec'ed desktop and to be honest I've yet to see a chokehold on my laptop due to lower memory.
Id stick with 2GB then see if you really need to upgrade it later -
yes. as far as i can tell. its DDR2 SODIMM, so it should work. dont know if its 200pin or not, but it looks like thats the only format so far
-
Yes it will work, DDR2 memory will be in for a while for notebooks. Theyll be phased out and outdated in maybe two years.
I havent seen any DDR3 boards on laptops yet so it might be a while till it becomes a standard. -

i ordered to of them it is
667 4-4-4-12 by g.skil
i have it on a x64 of vista home primuim and the speed in normal applications has change alittle.
the real performance is in game i get a 5-15 fps increse in games -
Normally, on a full opration i have these following open
Autocad
Inventor
Photoshop CS
video rendering
Ventrillo
Remote Desktop/VPN
I have them all open at times because i use all of them for work, so i need every bit of memory i could get. but now that i will have 2notebooks. it can share some load.
Thanks, i placed the order and will update this thread on how it goes. -
wow.... yes with those programs, extra RAM will be helpful. u seem to have a cool job
are you planning on upgrading to a 64bit edition of Windows so you can use all 4GB? still, an extra 1.2GB is really helpful. -
What you haven't considered is that probably this year DDR2 will survive the latest technology, but next year you'll have to buy DDR3 and actually buying more than you need isn't a bad thing (even though it also works at a higher frequency). My advise is to install x64.
-
i advise that too. eventually ill have to move on to a 64bit OS. but for now, im sticking with 32bit and 2GB of RAM. i just wish that 64bit OSes had the same hardware support and reliability as 32bit OSes

Nice choice of lappy.
There's always the option of 3GB of Ram. Yeah, it's $100 more. You could always buy a 2gb stick from crucial for about $50. Also, I think HP uses motherboards that will dual channel async memory. So there's no performance loss.
BTW, DDR3 starts this summer when Montevina debuts. Intel's making a mad push to get DDR3 manufacturers to ramp up production for Monte's release. So if you were think about using it on a future lappy, don't rely too heavily on that wish. -

as stated, i cant run vista.
well i could, but i would get fired from work by not being able to finish work.
work software is not compatible with vista "yet" unfortunately, so i need to run windows 2000 or XP pro. -
XP Pro all the way
