My usb external drive was working before.

I reinstalled from scratch and installed win7-32. I installed all the drivers I could find on the hp site including the usb2.0 drivers. I even deleted the usb from device manager and let that reinstall, then reinstalled the usb driver.

when I plug in an external hard drive, it does not say anything. not no driver found, just nothing. plugging in the dvd drive works and the ethernet works also.

    any ideas?

Have you tried plugging the USB hard drive into another computer to verify that it works?

Also, if there's only a single USB cable (not a double-ended USB Y-cable) your drive probably isn't receiving power. You might need an external power adapter.
