I was trying to watch a dvd rip of a movie the other day and nearly spent 2 hours on how to get 5.1 audio out of my hdmi... (I ripped a personal movie i actualy owned) the 5.1 works on my desktop through spdif so I know the audio is working, but for some reason i can not get it to work through hdmi out on my laptop... I have tryed every piece of software/ driver that i know of but just can not get it to output the 5.1 audio... anyone have any insight on my issue

Does your TV/Receiver have Pro Logic II? I'm pretty sure you need it for audio to work over HDMI from the Envy.

Did you set the default audio device to HDMI?

Right click the sound/speaker icon in tray. Select playback devices. With the HDMI cable plugged in, select the HDMI device, right click and set as default.

You will likely have to do this each time you plug in the HDMI cable. Though, it might be automatic for your system.

Also, depending on the rip codec, you might need a codec for 5.1(A/C3). Use Shark007 codec pack for win 7. It's the best out there and it is free.

In the Shark settings control panel, click the audio tab and select "set ac3 filter to use S/PDIF." For some encodings, you may need to make sure to deselect pass through for full digital audio via HDMI. Also make sure to click "disable auto speaker configuration" on that page.
