I see this under the hp&compaq section, not sure if u guys normally check there so I just make this thread to lead to that topic.

And a question for everyone to discuss, whether the new gpu (if true ) will have a huge performance upgrade? I dont care about sandy bridge as much but a better gpu is probably good.

    Heres the thread, http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...-bridge-graphics-configurations-revealed.html

noodle, yeah I saw this thread too. Like you, I'm also interested in the new GPU coming out. Sandy Bridge is not that great since its still using the same 32nm architecture. I'm waiting for the Ivy next with 22nm or later years....if you recall, I mentioned several times I'd be getting a new laptop in 4 or more years since I expect the Envy 17 3D to last me that long, but yes, I'd like a better GPU since I've read like most of you guys how HP underclocked our beautiful HD 5850....bleh :(

Also the fact that we currently cannot play 3D blurays on them to see on 3D HDTV through HDMI cable...ugh.... I will wait for as long as possible once I get my rebuilt Envy 3D.... if my 21 days to return the lap get close to the end and I hear nothing about the new GPU, I might just keep it, but if a new GPU is coming out for the Envy 17 3D in a month or so, I would be willing to send it back and wait just a bit, but only a bit....

Huh? I thought the Envy 17 3D did that automatically depending on the program and how GPU intensive it is...the CPU is making those decisions as far as I know, and so, there should not be a button to press.... Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think he meant switch between integraded gpu and dedicated gpu. i7 cpu dont support that function if I remembered correctly, hp envy 17/3d always use the 5850 when gpu is needed i think.

I just wonder how long can the 5850 last for mainstream games in mid to high quality. So far as to the recommanded system config (not minium) for all the games I played, the highest suggest gpu amd 3000+ and cpu dual core 2ghz+ i think.

you cannot expect any performance from these integrated gpus, as theyre just part of the cpu and meant for power-saving modes. also, only the dual-core cpus have that integrated gpu, the i7qm cpus dont.

however, sandy bridge cpus will all have the integrated gpu, hence the switchable graphics feature, which is great.

the other mentioned ATI gpus are fairly weak, as theyre only entry-level and low-end models.

gotta wait for ATI mobility HD6700, HD6800 & HD6900 (HD5800 equivalent) for power.

See the thing is when the i5 ENVY 17's existed a while ago, they did not have switchable graphics, despite their ability to have them. That's why I'm unsure if HP will implement them in their updated versions of ENVY.

really?! didnt know that.. well, thats another case of "paying for more/something better than you get" with HP consumer products.. im really afraid of my envy 17 3d due to arrive in the next days.. hope it wont make me miss my beloved elitebooks too much.

but i hope the guys @ HP consumer products development think about the (mainly bad) critics on their products, even (or rather especially) the envy line - and implement the switchable gfx feature, which really is a must on such a "rig".. otherwise theres no reason not to buy a desktop instead, which is far more powerful for the same or less money, since portability (battery life) is close to not being available on a high-end multimedia or gaming notebook.

I knew this was coming soon... :D

I don't want a laptop that always use a discrete GPU for basic graphics (wasting battery and heating internal components), the SB + AMD 6000 is a perfect combination (assuming we are getting switchable GPUs).

Waiting to return my exchange, KJ... heheheh :)

It should be also more 3D friendly  :
    -HDMI 1.4
-Full HD 3D (any kind of resolution)
-As you said, probably faster (or maybe just better drivers)

noodle, if this thing comes out at the end of 2011, there is no point of at least for me to wait. I need something in the next couple months, 3 tops. So if I get my new rebuilt Envy 17 3D and the 21 days are gonna go bye bye, then I'm keeping it, unless I hear guarantee news that the new chips for Envy 17 will be out soon.

I am not holding my breath! lol

yea prob same for me, as long as theres no major issue on the new one im keeping it. So far this laptop has been great except some small issues. It handled most of the games i throw at it at high setting, didnt check fps but no lag cept on Crysis warhead max setting and lost planet max setting. So far i played nba 2k11, black ops, borderland, darksiders, need for speed, transformer wfc, tomb raider, resident evil, lost planet 2 on the laptop if any1 wonder what games im refering to.

Of course if it comes out before feb or march id get the newer model even if its just for 17 w/o 3d

Noodle- I dont suppose you could play some Fallout3:New Vegas could you? I loaded a few games on the Laptop like yourself and they play very well, but for some reason when I start playing New Vegas, every game starts to get glitchy and I get Crash to Desktops.
I got a feeling that Fallout New Vegas is screwing up my other games- but I'm not sure or dont know what to do about it. The first session of Fallout the fan hardly ever comes on, like it doesnt break a sweat. But once I play other sessions of Fallout, the fan immediately comes on and gets super hot just for looking at the menu screen.

not totally sure, I never tried fallout new vegas cause I thought borderland is a better rpg style fps. I can try it out later when i get hold of a copy, does it need physx?
