hi all, i have a late model hp laptop which i have owned for a little over a year, for majority of time i have not had any problems and it has worked fine.

recently it has been crashing on me, what happens is the cpu slowly powers down and a blue screen appears saying something along the lines of "crash dump in xx seconds", then it auto-restarts and before it gets to the windows screen it says "Non system file or disk, insert disk and press any key".

to get around this i have been pressing f10 on start up and restoring all settings to default and then the comp slowly but surely loads up again.

im having battery problems aswell and have found that the laptop overheats when i run it on normal or high performance mode therefore i always run it on powersaver (and even then it sometimes gets really hot), could this have anything to do with the problem?

thanks for any advice and apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum

You mean you cannot get into windows anymore and recieve that message?
I believe it is a failed harddrive.
If you are currently still within warranty, contact them for a replacement harddrive, also tell them about the overheating etc... and they will probably ask you to send it in for a look at.

when the message comes up then no i cannot get into windows, i have to restart then press f10 to go to options menu, from there i restore defaults, save and exit and then i can sometimes get through to my desktop without that message loading up again (other times the message keeps coming up repetetively).

unfortunatley i am no longer covered by my warranty as it was only 1 year long, what exactly do you mean by failed harddrive? I have always looked after my computer, never exposing it to water, sunlight etc, never dropped it or anything

Do you think its time to cut my loss and buy another latop? with this experience im staying away from hp

Thank you very much for your reply

did not realise it was possible, do i just take the battery out and connect it to wall? does it damage the computer if i use it like this until i find another battery?

    thanks
