If you put 800mhz ram into a santa rosa notebook, it will downclock it too 667mhz so it would be cheaper just to get DDR2-667 ram. Santa Rosa notebooks can use 4gb(2x2gb) with a 64bit OS.

    I would get 1x2gb stick.

Look at the Hot ram deals thread for great prices on DDR2-667 ram

As kdawga wrote, Santa Rosa only supports DDR2 667 so no need to go for DDR 800. You could even use DDR 533. If your running vista it seems 2 gb is the sweet spot so I would get at least 2x1gb to keep your dual channel intact (or a t least 1 x 1gb if you dont want to spend money all at once). Keep in mind if you have a C2D with large caches they lessen the need for high performance memory.

In a number of places I have seen the reference to 4GB of memory only with 64 OS. I have a desktop P4 that I run Vista on with 4GB of memory. The computer BIOS sees the full 4GB, but the 32bit Vista only sees 3GB. I know this is due to the addresses that Vista uses for other things.

Question--On HP vd9500 series will the 32bit Vista do the same or will it crash and not run?

Only replace the RAM with the same type of spec specified by HP. Too fast a speed is probably money down the drain.

Get the 667. Faster just gets downclocked. Get a good deal, test the ram, and if it works, it is as good as the higher priced ram. I got 4 gigs for under $200. Vistax64 sees it all, but my graphics card sucks up 768mb.
