What model HP is this?? Some older HP models(2004 and older) had problems with the power connector on the motherboard losing contact over time due to the heat and stress placed on it. This might be the cause for the system no booting but in this case the battery would also not be charging. If you are certain the battery is charged and working then it might be some other hardware issue with the motherboard.

In any case if the laptop is only 1 or 2 months old, it should be still under warranty. Call HP and send it in for warranty service.

There are threads about this happening to people with newer laptops, even happened to me and my first DV6500T. What you have to do to fix it, is take off the back cover plate, remove the memory, and then the button battery (CR 2032). When you do this, it will reset the mother board. Replace the battery, memory, cover, and see if the screen comes back on.

I didn't have the problem since. I've also told the laptop to do nothing when the case is closed.

It could be the motherboard HD or ram. Does a light even turn on when you press the button. Try plugin in the adapter and see what happens

When you press the power button what exactly happens? On my dv6000z the power supply went bad and all the lights on the laptop would flash briefly for only a second or two then turn off. Please go more into detail on what exactly happens so we can better understand and help you.

I am curious about what would happen if he plugged in an external monitor. Would it also be black?

It should, the issue with the repair recalled notebooks was with the GPU, so its going to affect even an external monitor.

I had the same problem and called HP. They wanted $ to help. I decided to give it another look before paying them. 1. Unplug the power cord 2. Remove the battery 3. Put the battery back in (makes a locking noise when reinstalled) This worked for me; let me know if it helps.

They took money from Nvidia for supplying all these faulty graphics cards. They should fix all these issues for free. Looks like, HP paid fat bonuses themselves. Upon reading all these issues on net, i am embarrassed for buying one more hp laptop.
