Well I know it did this before and I think it does this when I leave stuff running on my computer for a few days, which I know is stupid and I need to be smart and reset and such, but it begins to make this grinding/sputtering/low whining noise and the computer becomes very slow. When I try to shut down, the computer is so slow at that point where I pretty much have to manually turn it off and when I do, the sounds sound like they are winding down as the power is turned off and then they stop. It's happened before and I know I need to let it sit off over night, but does anyone have any light that they could shed on this issue? [ :(!]

Only 2 things that can be grinding or sputtering:

    1. HDD
    2. CPU fan

If it's the HDD, your system shouldn't become slow, just dead, so it's looking more like the CPU fan. If this is the case, it's possible the CPU was just heating up. When this happens, usually the CPU will start to lower its speed to try to reduce it's heat. If it goes on long enough, the system will just turn off. I'd send the unit in for repair.

Cool, i'll replace the fan. I noticed it starts making this sound when the fan has shut off or hasn't been on forawhile. There is no dust and I have tried to spray a lot. Everything just slows way down as like instead of someone walking, they walk and inch at a time (Great Analogy [:I])

    Sorry for not responding sooner.

Yes, you can just replace the fan, but if the unit's currently under warranty, this will effectively void it. Some systems are also fairly involved in order to replace CPU fans. This is definitely not for someone that has never opened a notebook before.

My friend builds computers so I am going to have him take a look on it.

Ok so I am looking at it again and I am using it now because the internet is the only thing that runs at normal pace. I wish you guys could here this sound. It's just this constant low buzzing sound that fluxiates everytime the computer peforms any task.

While it was loading up, the light that shows that the computer is thinking was constantly on, taking no break and the noise presists. I looked at the CPU usage in the performance tab of ctrl alt delete and whenecer the % of CPU moves up or down, it correlates with the sound. I'm sick of this crap.

I ran the harddrive diagnostic and it came back perfect, so I doubt it't the harddrive. Maybe the ram?

Just because of lack of funds right now, I haven't been able to buy a new fan yet, but I was wondering if my laptop could have two fans maybe. I see 2 vents, well at least they look like vents but I haven't gotten around to opening the laptop up yet.

One more thing is, that I can't find the specs of my fan and so I don't know which size to get

    Snoops,

Goto HP's Part Surfer to locate the exact part number for your fan. You'll need to know the manufacturer's P/N which is located on the underside of your unit. It'll start with 2 letters then 3 #'s, and some more letters/characters.
