Hi all I have a hp zv5410us laptop. I have it plugged into a 19" lcd monitor. I'm looking to upgrade my monitor to a 24" widescreen lcd (Gateway FHD2400). I wanted to know how much difference will it be using the vga instead of the dvi (since my laptop doesn't have a dvi port).

DVI is Sharper and the difference is noticeable, especially for larger monitors (text will look a bit blurry). I have a 22”, when I first got the monitor I used the supplied VGA cable (since my notebook has HDMI and I didn’t have a HDMI-> DVI cable at the time). It was pretty good and I was very satisfied till I got myself a HDMI > DVI cable. Now there is no going back.

IMO unless you compare the two, you won't notice anything wrong with VGA output. So I'd say go for it.

Thank you very much. I know my laptop is old but it works very well and I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a new one. Could any one tell me if my laptop will support 1920 x 1200 resolution if I plug it up with a 24" monitor

Does it have a NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go Graphics card? If so, then most probably it would support 1920x1200 though I couldn’t find any hard evidence to support this.

nVidia site has taken down detailed specs of the GeForce4 440, nothing in HP site; there were few forum posts mentioning the maximum supported resolution as 2048x1536. The only reliable source I could find supporting this claim was the Apple Powerbook G4 User manual which says it’s Geforce4 440 Go supports external monitors up to 2048x1536. Therefore at least we know that the hardware is capable of driving an external monitor at 2048x1536, but whether or not it will work in yours depends on the drivers and how far HP has customized it..

Better call HP and ask to make sure.

It'll work. It might not be as sharp as you'd like, but it'll at least be usable until the new dv5/dv7/etc notebooks start being delivered.
