I looked hard at the zx5000's while I was shopping for my laptop. They seemed liek good machines. And I liked the Mobile Processors. The main reason I went with the zd7000 ws the HUGE screen that it has. Otherwise, in my opinion, the two are very similer. Curious, how much did yours come out to when you ordered? Also just so you know the initial date that hp gives you for expected arrival for customized computers is greatly over estimated. I got mine 2 weeks before they said I was going to. Have fun with your new toy, and keep us up to date with your experiences.

There's a question I got for you all after you read about mine.
I got mine, customized. I found the 10 percent off coupon on the net the day I ordered it. And with the 100 rebate my base laptop will come to 1473. I used the 10 percent to basically upgrade it. Because I was going to get the lower RPM harddrive and the lesser of the 2 Radeons they were offering until then. But after I found the 10 percent off coupon, I quickly upgraded, and also the 12 cell battery instead of the 8 cell. But anyway, quick question for all of you.
On the bottom of the ZX5000 there are 2 fans. On mine, only the center one ever spins. The one on the outside bottom never comes on. I went to HP tech support and they said it comes on based on how hot the laptop is. Well today I left it on for 5 hours and still the second fan never came on. Accidently I left the laptop on in my carrying case somehow and after an hour to and hour and a half before I noticed it, the laptop had warmed up the whole carrying bag. Still when I pulled it out (still running) and looked, the second fan was not spinning. Curiously the bottom of the laptop wasn't that warm around that second fan, and for a quick second I thought it actually was running but on closer inspection the blades were still not moving. So I already contacted HP with a reply but I found this forum and wanted to post to see if this is common or a problem. My laptop is 3 days old.
By the way, I love it. Its Kick A$$. My first laptop but everybody in my department of computer gurus loves it. I especially like the 15.4 inch screen. Because its laid out in such a way that the extra .4 inch went lengthwise but not heightwise it seems. So you get what looks like a widescreen monitor without having to go the the humongous 17 screen. DVDs play so smooth and the color and screen are excellent. Thats all I got to say.

Humm, wierd. I instinctivly would say you might have got a bad fan. You said tech support had told you that it should only come on when needed. Maybe it came on in the case and you just didn't notice it. You did say that even after running in hte case that the bottom wasn't really that hot. I don't have any experience with that model so I really am not that much of a help. I do know that my HP zd7000 does have settings that change the fan speeds depending on the temp, so maybe yours does really have some sort of system to use only one fan unless needed. I would call tech support again and see if you get the same answer.

tewellbaum, if yours doesn't seem to come on either, then I feel better. Id rather not send this thing off so fast after I got it, its only 4 days old. Also, have you thought of purchasing the base unit for our laptop? it comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse and gives you bigger speakers and that cool stance with your screen up high. I might do it.

hey, sorry for the late reply...my specs are:

2.8 mobile p4
512 (1x512)
60 gb 5.4k
15.4sxga+
11b/g w/ bluetooth
5in1 card reader w/free64mb sd card
12cell batt
9600ati 64 mb card
dvdrom/cdrw
pretty much same specs as thedon's but not sure about the bluetooth

whats crazy is i originall opted for the 3.06 mobile w/10% coupon but i ordered it on the 31st (last day to use the coupon) but since i specified a diff shipping addr, my order was placed on automatic review, and once they approved my order, they made me reorder the computer with no coupon....so i downgraded the processor as i dont think i will see the 3.06 to 2.8 difference with what i will use the computer for...but a crappy ordering policy nonetheless.

thanks for the information though....anyone of you all use the computer for games? if so, what kind? tia

Let me know what you found out from HP support on your fan issue i am just as curious as you. Thanks
quote:

Humm, wierd. I instinctivly would say you might have got a bad fan. You said tech support had told you that the it should only come on when needed. Maybe it came on in hte case and you just didn't notice it. You did say that even after running in hte case that the bottom wasn't really that hot. I don't have any experience wit hthat model so I really am not that much of a help. I do know that my HP zd7000 does have settings that change the fan speeds depending on the temp, so maybe yours does really have some sort of system to use only one fan unless needed. I would call tech support again and see if you get the same answer.

I just got off the phone with HP support and they are going to have an engineer contact me on the second fan issue...with what i have been told that optipnal temps. below 95 degrees over that temp and when you are gaming and the proccessor gets hot it will kick on then.
quote:

tewellbaum, if yours doesn't seem to come on either, then I feel better. Id rather not send this thing off so fast after I got it, its only 4 days old. Also, have you thought of purchasing the base unit for our laptop? it comes with a wireless keyboard and mouse and gives you bigger speakers and that cool stance with your screen up high. I might do it.

Thanks. I also did some research, because when I talked with with the techs, thru email only, they didn't sound so sure like the one you talked to. But I decided to just go to BestBuy because they have a few laptops of the same model that are on pretty much all day. And sure enough, only one fan going. But now I have to reply to HP who is already sending a fan replacement.

tewellbaum you dont have to worry about my questioning the fan issue. I found this on another forum.

quote:
Originally posted by rancid on x1000.com
Yup, mine both come on when I am doing something cpu intensive or graphic intensive like playing a game. Surfing and doing misc. then it never comes on.

Excellent, thats why I join as many forums as possible for products I got. That simple reply saved me from them taking up my laptop for a few days. I just found a game (Marvel Super Heroes on Mame) and played that for a few minutes, fan instantly turned on while I was playing and went on and off a few times.
Before then, It never came on. Also today I was in Bestbuy messing around with the same model as I got, and those didn't have that second fan running even though they are on all day. But it makes sense now. I quickly called to cancel the tech support call.

mine came the same way, from China. I didn't know until I told a friend that on the FedEx shipment tracking it shows Alaska, and she told me that its coming from China with a stop in Alaska. I got mine pretty quick after it was shipped. It ended up in customs in some state back east for an extra day but I got it the very next day.
Good luck, have fun with that puppy. Yesterday I was out WiFi hunting and came across a few open internet ready hotzones. Chatting in the car is cool.

Well thats just it. If you go online and search for Free Wifi zones in your area, you might find a list like I did. I dont have any Wifi service plan but I can drive to a few spots I've identified that has free access and not even have to get out of the car. But if you want garuanteed access at each Starbucks and Borders ect, then go with the Tmobile. I was at a Starbucks, that was my first test of the wireless, and I found the tmobile zone and tried to connect and they are locked down pretty good if you dont have a username/password. In fact, I connected, tried to test my Internet Explorer and the tmobile hotspot page came up asking for my login. But after I checked the free webpage, I drove to a Manhattan Bread Co place, and connected to their Wifi from the parking lot and chatted on yahoo for 20 minutes. On the way there and back home I ran into a bunch of wifi hotzones. Also in Long Beach here in Socal they have a few blocks of free internet access. I haven't tried it yet. I dont think Ill get a pay service yet. Ill just remain a wifi hunter for now.
