Soon after the initial release of HP's Pavilion tx2500z laptop that offered AMD's Turion Ultra Zm-86 as an customized option it was pulled of the customize list. I emailed HP hoping to find some kind of date as to when it'll be available again with no satisfaction from the answer i received. I was just wondering if anyone else that hangs out around here will have a better clue as to where the ZM-86 has disappeared or if its been recalled due to faultiness or whatever news you know about. I can't find any laptop that offers the ZM-86. It's not dire important to have that exact processor...I'd just like it.

Any links to blogs, news, or anything would be helpful!

    Thanks,
    KuKu

Ya my tx2510us has a zm-80. I would've gotten a similiar model with a ZM-86 if possible but it wasn't available like you said. I assume it's because the ZM-86 runs to hot. My zm-80 runs very hot I must say. I'm going to have to open up my tx and replace the thermal paste and clean the heatsink. Not much else I can do.

It's hard to believe that 200mhz can really increase the heat to that extent. I'll just have to wait and see what the tech junkies have to say. I've scanned google to the other end of the universe to no avail.

Does anyone know if the Dv5z or dv7z at one point had the option of the ZM-86?

I was one of the lucky ones to get it before it vanished. from what i can tell, HP doesnt seem to have new 2.4's in because couple of people who sent in the tx2500's due to hardware issues(not related to the cpu) with ZM-86's and HP offered them replacements with the ZM-82 & other upgrades to make up the difference. Why, its not being offered in pretty much any system, I dont know! Mine seems to work fine and unless I am encoding video or anything processor intensive, the temps are average for the tx2500. The ZM-82 should be close enough that the performance difference might not be noticeable.

If it matters, there's even more elusive turion ultra, the ZM-84(2.3GHz) which was shown in the model on display at CES back in June but hasn't been seen since.

Yeah, but is the heat really an issue? I'm starting to think its more of the design of the laptops more so than the cpu & hardware inc.

guess i'll have to stick with the dv5z with zm-82 :( oh well.. thanks for input :)

With the dv5z, I presume it would less than what I can feel with the tx2500. The cpu itself runs a bit warm but the heat doesnt seem to transfer to the chassis. Of course this is with regular usage(not too processor/graphics intensive). However, if you do use the system to regularly encode video or gaming then as expected the cpu will run hot. From what I have seen the Turion RM/ZM's seem to top out in the low 90's C max.

LOL! What were you guys running that made the processor work hard. I can surf NBR & the www(with couple of other things running in the background) all day without breaking a sweat or frying eggs or getting 3rd degree burns.

Usually, the cpu hangs around 50C - 68C for the above activity. If the website is loaded with flash it tops out in the 75C range. not hot enough to casue any problems. Of course, encoding on the other hand pushes it to 95C.

I don't know why mine runs so hot.
I do watch 1hr videos online and if I touch the vented corner of the notebook for more than 5 seconds I'll get 3rd degree burns. No joke!

You guys are making me doubt picking amd for my laptop. I'm sure intel is just as hot but if not, not much less noticeable at least? I still have time to pick. But I thought I had my mind set. Not so sure now.

Maybe mine's an anomoly. I used to have a DV6000 that I couldn't have sit on my lap do to the heat (Intel Core Duo, Ge7400, 2Gb ram). I used a Belkin cooler and still couldn't have it on my lap while just surfing. It was that hot. I still use the Belkin cooler, but now with the DV5Z and there is absolutely no heat on my legs. In fact, they are cool. I can touch the laptop anywhere and its barely warm. The top is completely cool and only slightly warm "anywhere" else. Mine has the ZM80, stock 3200 ATI and 4 GB ram (kingston dual channel from Newegg).. Not totally thrilled with Vista but only cuz I'm a newbie with vista. From a heat point of view, I am thrilled.. :D

    Okay..i'm switching to intel.

    email to amd:

    Reply from AMD:

Here's Hp's reply. It was mostly a canned response but they had like 1 hour tops response time. I was quite impressed.

The only thing that really pisses me off...ITS ALREADY BEEN RELEASED! The tx2500z proves it. I don't understand why they're talking about a release date when its been released!! gnregirenguie gner. It really hurts to go intel...i'll try my best to at least get an ati graphics card. Thanks for all the input.

Edit: the mad faces are at a disgruntled pre-sales buyer. Not directed at the people with the helpful input that i'm glad contributed. :)

I heard all sorts of things about the 2.5GHz being too hot. But then again after gaming for hours on my 2.1GHz the air coming out is pretty warm but not burning hot. I did an orthos test with the laptop sitting on a table with no cooler or any props for better airflow and I got to the 80C area but it wasnt stable there as it often went back to the 70C zone. All in all there is alot packed under then hood and it does agreat job for my multitasking/gaming/work/school, and if I need more power Ill just hop on the dell. Do you really need that extra 400MHz?

If I am in a down mood and need cheering up I just call HP because they know very little about their own products.

Is the extra cache = extra slow processor even thought the T9400 is 2.53?

Umm...no. The T9xxx series consume have a higher TDP rating at 35W compared to the P8/7xxx series which are rated at 25W. Usually, this means the P's will run a bit cooler than the T9xxx series processors.

In the C2D lineup the P8600 or the P8400 are probably the best value for money.
