First of all, try hitting Fn and F11 to disable to Ambient Light Sensor...that might help that problem with the screen brightness. Also, I would try re-installing the keyboard , mouse, and touchpad drivers in order to fix what else is going on here.

Also, what do you mean by ctrl+alt+del not working? What do you mean by "you cannot do anything?" Can you see anything on the screen when you do ctrl+alt+del (even the background or the Start Bar)...sometimes Windows is a pain in the butt so if you can give me more details that would be great? Did you just get the computer, or have you had it for a while and this just started? No offense, but I'm having a little trouble understanding everything that is going on because of the broken sentences here...I'll check up on this thread tomorrow morning and see what's going on.

Sorry for asking, but I'm trying to get a handle on what is going on here.

Does the keyboard work at all...can you type with it normally (I'm assuming you might be using another computer to get to these forums)?

Is this a new notebook computer?
Or is it one you've had for a little while?

Also, can you run a virus scan on the computer? I would not be surprised if a bad program could do things like this...

Try re-installing this software for the HP nc8430...it might not have been properly installed, or even uninstalled, at some point. If you do not have this software enabled, some functions on the keyboard will NOT work (mute, volume, etc).

Finally, are there any unknown devices in your device manager? To get there, right click on My Computer->Properties->Hardware->Device Manger. Be sure to click thru everything to expand the list of hardware.

Don't worry about the bad english...we can figure this one out. I'm just suggesting a few things here that might shed some light on the issue and help us identify what is wrong here.

RE: i think that something is wrong with my software.

Software problem? That would be better than a HARDWARE PROBLEM...

Unless someone can come up with the exact fix you need, it may be FASTER to just use the "recovery disc(s) to restore the machine to "as-shipped" condition...

If you do a restore and the problem is still there, you have a HARDWARE PROBLEM...

I'd try using the "recovery discs", or running the recovery option from the hard drive... (Restoring the machine to as-shipped" condition... Unless someone can point you to a "fix".

PS: How "old" is the machine, date of purchase? I would assume it's pretty new, due to the cpu.... How long did it work before the problem? Has the unit been connected to the internet? Are you running a GOOD FIREWALL, ANTI-VIRUS, ANTI_ SPYWARE, ANTI- TROJAN, ANTI Keylogger apps?

Are you running (using) Internet Explorer as a web browser?... Using it will allow alot of stuff in your system...

    PS:

Do the FN , F9, F10 keys works while you're in the BIOS?????

Powerup the machine from a cold boot, PRESS F10 (before Windows loads) , which should put you into the BIOS...

If the brightness, FN keys aren't working in the BIOS, you have a HARDWARE PROBLEM...

Nope...you need that program for it to work. I didn't think about checking it out in BIOS...good suggestion there.

Anyway, I would go ahead and run the recovery software for the computer. It does sound like some nasty virus or bug has gotten onto your machine. Recovering the computer will get rid of anything that isn't supposed to be there, and the recovery program itself (for the nc8430) will NOT install anything you don't want. Just leave it as is once you restore it.

First of all BACKUP ANY IMPORTANT DATA you have...the recovery program WILL completely erase your hard drive.

If you have not made your recovery DVDs, get some DVD+R discs ( NOT DVD+/-RW) and burn the DVDs. The program to burn them should be (the name for the program might be different) under Start->All Programs->HP Recovery Manager->Create Recovery DVDs. Use those discs to perform a COMPLETE DESTRUCTIVE RECOVERY (that is why you need to save your personal files elsewhere...such as another computer or a DVD+/-RW).

You should be as good as new after that.

Try re-installing the Quick Launch buttons first...if that does not solve the problem the most efficient method to fix it would be the recovery DVDs.

I was talking about going into the BIOS (by pressing F10)... and once there seeing if the FN up and down keys for the BRIGHTNESS work, etc.

    .

If the function keys work in the BIOS, consider yourself lucky that the HARDWARE is working and run a restore via the recovery dvd's /hard drive.

Could you run that by me again?

Sounds like there was a setting in the BIOS you changed...

The ctrl and fn keys were SWAPPED around, assigned wrong?
and you uninstalled the quick lanch button app.

ATI Hotkey poller can cause trouble too. Disable it though msconfig and ATI CCC if needed.
