    Hello!
Is the standard power supply unit compatible with hp docking station? I've seen a lot of cheap used docking stations on ebay - unfortunately many of them are sold withou power supply unit.
    Thanks!

Yes and no. Basic 90W should power your laptop but will not provide enough power to additional devices you might have attached. I noticed this myself when I wondered why the DVBT card wasn't working in the pci-express slot.

Get 120W or 180W power supply.

So the connector is the same, right? I won't connect anything more as I do now - I just want to have it convenient as I wouldn't have to plug mouse, phone, usb hub, sound system, ethernet, power supply...

Yes, connector is same and the power supply can be used to charge your laptop directly.

You can try: get the dock and see if it works like you plan to use it. If not, then buy a bigger power supply. In the end I find having an extra power in laptop bag more useful :) And one in the living room, one extra at this table, one at work... :D

No, there are TWO connector styles made for the HP docks
One has the same connector as the laptop, then a few older docks have the old
    barrel type of connectors.
The Docks look & work the same, just different power connectors
There are adapters that can be used to convert the connector.
Yes, get at least a 120w to power the dock, the 90w will not work for the dock

Those docks would be made in 2004/5 and earlier, as those business laptops used that older style power source, similar to the Pavilions in same era.

Not the case, i have owned the 8510w and P as well as the 6910p and still have one 6930p.
There are HP docks that look and work 100% the same, yet the power adapters are different.
I purchased several "five" via eBay and the seller did not send the correct power supplies as many had been mis-matched connectors"
We did get it resolved and only then he/I learned that HP had these differences.

THE old advanced dock has psu number PA1131-08R SeriesHSTNN-LA01
    PART #393947-001
REPLACE WITH SPARE PART # 394901-001
    135 WATTS
    Dock 489 aa
The simple dock has 120 watt I think and the Advanced with NAS 180 watt

I bought a few replacement psu for the docks from inandoutcomputers on E-bay , they are factory HP psu , think I paid $20.00 for the 180 watt and $19.00 for the 135 watt psu , all were perfect

thats very good price for that. I was looking for a travel adapter - are those 180w larger than stock 90w? I don't use so many external devices that I would need 180w. I would rather use my stock adapter with dock and buy travel adapter...

Btw: does the notebook recharge faster with 180W adapter?

    Update:
I've tried the dock with stock 90W adapter and it doesn't work. Could be defective unit? No lights on, no USB works.
Only thing that works is the ethernet port. And the power button :)

HP support told me to use docking station adapter 463953-001 as nothing else would work. Is that right?

Btw the connector DID fit inside as it is same by looking at it (diameter, how deep from the cover it is, etc.). Are those older docking stations totally different?
