I got my laptop just a few days ago. It has a defect in that it makes makes a brittle, grainy buzzing sound whenever there is movement on screen and a chirpy one when under intensive loads or logging in/out of Windows. I'm going to return this and I'm wondering if an i5 will put out less heat and in turn make the laptop run quieter? I read that the i7 is a powerhouse with emphasis on performance and thus disregards power usage, etc... but this was for 1st gen i7. Is second gen i7 any better?

The fan is also on more often then I wish. Considering the usage below, is this normal?

People suggest getting an i7 here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...60274-i5-2410m-vs-i5-480m-vs-i7-2630qm-3.html

I'm just wondering what the temperature difference is and if it's enough for the fan to shut up. It's annoying taking this to school and having the fan be on seemingly the whole time. Or is my laptop defective here, too? Would your fans kick on and stay on for 30min ~ 1hr at the temperatures above? I can imagine the fan being kicked on for a few minutes at a time but this laptop just won't shut up. I have HP cool sense and my power plan settings to Balanced. I want a quiet, powerful laptop, and I read the dv6t was good in that regard.

The fan shutted up once I closed Photoshop and turned the graphics back to IGP.

Going to turn Photoshop back on and see how much it increases with IGP.

Make sure you are using the intel graphics, not ati when on battery or not gaming. It lowers the temps quite a bit, and if you are not loading your cpu, the fan should be silent.
