my dv4000 has been with me for 5 days and here are some of my initial impressions:
- Screen is best thing it has. Spacious and wide. But when reading texts on screen, they are crisp only from certain narrow angle.
- It is light. Fits easily into my backpack. 6.5 pounds is not a big deal to carry around!
- Battery lasts from 2.5 to 3 hours. When in battery mode, the screen gets little dimmer though.
- I ran super pi test for 2m points and it finished in 1.48 sec. Haven't played games in it yet.
- Touch mousepad is deeper than the general level of keyboard so chances of touching the mouse pad when typing is low. I don't need to turn it off, I think this is the reason why HP omitted touchpad turn-off button in dv4000.
- Does not get heated at all, even when i keep it on whole day.
- 'Altec Lansing' speaker is mediocre. Bass is not enough. I use 1$ HP earphone all the time I listen to music.![]()
- Keyboard is big and wide. Has feeling of desktop keyboard. Dell users like me needs some time to get adjusted to different locations of 'del', 'end' keys...but once get used to, they are more convinient.
- Fan is quiet and does not come out often. but when it does, it produces loud hissing noise.
- Remote is other great thing it has. I used it in a presentation yesterday - it gives lot freedom in presenting. Don't need to walk back to the notebook.
- I miss built-in microphone though

I've had my dv4000 for three days. My fan seems to be on all the time. It came on probably within 10 minutes of first boot up. It comes on everytime I start it and seems to stay on and it still gets hot after a few hours. I'd add to your list booting up from across the room using the remote.

I've had my DV1000 for 11 days and the fan has been whisper quiet for me. I haven't even noticed it at all. I love the keyboard, very spacious and comfortable, I like it way more than my desktop keyboard.
I've grown to dislike the BrightView screen. I find it very annoying when displaying black or other dark colors, you can easily see your reflection which becomes distracting. But for displaying whites and light colors, the screen is very nice. I don't have any problems with the viewing angle, its quite nice.
I also love the speakers, some of if not the best I have ever heard. Though the included earbuds give better sound in my opinion. My DV4000 has also stayed quite cool in my lap.
I love the remote, its so cool and handy for powerpoint presentations and movie watching. The notebook is pretty light and easy to carry around, though I wish it was a little smaller.
My only complaint about this notebook is that I just wish that if HP is going to use these glossy screens, that they use some better ones like Sony's X-Brite or X-Brite ECO, which gives less glare than BrightView from what I've seen.
Overall an excellent notebook from HP in my opinion. -
