I wasn't given the option to go with a N wireless card when HP just replaced my notebook. I noticed you can get the 4965AGN off ebay for around 35$, I remember pulling apart my old v3000 and swore the wireless was swappable. Also the 4965AGN is an option for my new dv2700t se so it should work right?

The wireless card is removable/modular, so yes you can replace it (the card needs to have a mini-PCI-express interface to be compatible). However, the question is whether or not the notebook comes with the extra antennas if the Intel wireless card isn't pre-installed. If the other antennas aren't installed, then it would be almost useless to install the Intel card since you wouldn't have any of the benefits.

The bigger question is whether HP is still using BIOS whitelists that restrict you to using a handful of HP-approved internal WiFi cards. Last I knew they still were.

That's news to me.

I ran into this the hard way when I tried to install a Linux-friendly Atheros WiFi card in my zv5000z to replace the Linux-hostile Broadcom card. The BIOS errors on startup, complaining about the card. HP swears the FCC makes them restrict WiFi cards to ones tested in the particular model line but no one else does it. A few other people here have had the same problem with other HP notebooks. The BIOS can be patched to defeat the check but having to patch the BIOS every time there's an upgrade you want is not an acceptable solution to me.
install better wireless?
