    i have reformated my harddrive, tried f11 to recover and it comes up with error windows\system32\ hal.dll is missing or corrupt. can anyone help, thanks

    There is an error in your bootmgr.mgr file. The first attempt at a solution, IMO, would be to use a retail verson of the Vista installation DVD, boot from it (dependant upon the version you have installed... ie... x86 or x64) and choose "repair my computer" rather than install. Select the partition you have Vista installed at (most likely, C:\). From there you will be given a number of options including running system restore, opening a command prompt and so forth...

    How many total partitions do you have? Or specifically, are you dual-booting with XP?
