hey guys i got a offer by my local dealer.
im curruntly using an hp nx6310 with a t2300 1.66 ghz processor and 1 gb of ram.
he's willing to exchange that for a compaq note book for almost nothing.
the compaq is running on a celeron 520 processor which is 1.6 ghz.
HOW much difference will there be in performace between the core duo and celeron?
im using the laptop for music, movies, n a few games which dont demand crazy graphics.
my nx6310 with a gb of ram was good enough for all of this.
the compaq has better config in every way except for the processor.
WILL VISTA AERO WORK WITH CELERON AND A GIG OF RAM?
it worked perfectly with the nx6310.
what would the vista user experience index with celeron and a gb of ram be for the processor and graphics?
ill be using this compaq for a few months. after which ill be getting a better one.
the nx6310 is starting to fail. cd drive dont work. display probs/..... warrenty also over.
is it wise to jump down to celeron? only for using vista music. movies lil multi tasking. windows aero.
will i notice a HUGE difference?
thanks

advatages of getting the compaq :
- 80 gb hard disk (hp's got 40)
- 15.4 wide with brightscreen. (hp's got 15.0 matte finish)
- dvd WRITER (hp's got just a dvd rom, which is not workin lol)
- intel graphics 950. (hp's got the intel 945)
advantages of getting the hp
- CORE DUO 1.66GHZ processor. (compaq's got the celeron) -
Hmm,thats tough. As far as I know, the Intel Core Duo processor is superior to the intel celeron line of processors. The Celeron 520 is probably a decent processor, and that compaq will most likely be able to handle aero provided the graphics card supports it.
How bad of a condition is your hp in? -
thanks for the reply.
the hp's dvd drive aint working.
apart from that, vista does gimme a few glitches here n there.
when i close the lid, it never goes into standby mode. ive tried every setting possible and reformatted some 10 times lol.
i switch the wifi button on n off twice and the laptop hangs. again tried everything possible.
batt life is lil more and an hour. (used to be a lot better)
display gives me a weird line running across the screen once in a way.
apart from that i guess its okay.
i repair the nootbook's dvd drive from hp.... or pay the same amt for the repair (about 50 USD. im from india btw) and get the compaq with has its advantages in everyway except for the processor.
i love hp notebooks. im gonna get the dv6500t ( or the upgrade series ) in about 6 months... but its really outa my budget now.
either way i have to invest that money. in repairing the hp or buying the compaq. -
your dealer sounds like a crook. trading in a core duo for a celeron is a rip off no matter which way you look at it.
-
that is a good point there.
but what i wanna know is.....
will there be a VISIBLE difference between the 1.6 core duo and the 1.7 celeron in terms of vista usage. i.e aero graphics, music, movies, multitasking, games (warcraft 3 dota. which works well with the nx6310 ) etc... -
I would not do this trade if I were you. It is a serious trade down going from Core Duo to Celeron. Not worth it in my opinion. Just get an external harddrive and a new dvd writer to install and you will be better off (if you really need the dvd writer that is). Then just wait until you can afford the DV6500 and you will be happier in my opinion. Good luck and happy computing!

ok so this is a serious step down in processors....
my brothers laptop is using an intel centrino 1.9 ghz chip. and as far as our daily usage goes, i see not much of a difference between the centrino and core duo.
whats the difference between the celeron and his centrino chip? i think the celerom chip is newer and based on the core duo architecture with one core only? not sure tho. -
Vista will work on the Celeron M or any modern processor without any issues as long as you have good amount of RAM, a graphics card which supports Aero and a decent HDD. mVista isnt dependant on the processor as it is on other components of the system. -
I say go for it,them cellys have more power than watch you think, and you say you will get a better laptop in 6 months, sounds like your minds already made up,just do it man...............
-
thanks...
i guess im gonna buy it tomorrow.
the present laptop is getting on my nervers. i can hardly even use it anymore.... its just unusable.
my friends lenovo with almost the same specs seems to be workin fine.
just hope i dont regret the celeron... -
ok i finally got the laptop n here are my thoughts on it.
its a celeron m530 1.73 ghz.
80 gb hdd
15.4 brightview widescreen.
1.2 gb of ram.
intel x3100 graphics.
using it for a few hours and im quite happy with it.
performance wise- i notice a very lil difference between the celeron and core duo.... which is good
windows experience index is the same as my old laptop which is 3.1
aero works like a charm. screen is lovely. although the speakers are altec lancing.... my old laptop had a better sound quality.
but i have a few problems which i hope to get answers of...
1) i cant dual boot it with xp. it came with free dos. i added vista, xp says it cant find the hdd. is it something to do with that bios and SATA ****? im not sure about what it really is.
2) my touchpad scroll does'nt work. is it the synaptics driver? the hp site dont have any touchpad drivers for my lappy.
apart from that, im happy with my buy... considering in 4-5 months im getting a new one, and my old laptop was way too screwed. -
anyone with help on gettin xp to work?
-
-
a person from hp gave me the links to the driver adn the touchpad was a synaptics one. i installed the driver and the driver too does not have a scroll option.
what to do now?
and also, is there any way to get better sound quality from these altec lancing speakers?
the volume is good, but the quality is terrible! compared to the hp nx6310.
intel celeron 520 with vista.
