Should I buy the warranty with accidental protection? How does the envy 14 hold up over time?

Most of us have had the Envy 14 for at most a year. While I've noticed that HP has made a good faith effort to keep the pricing on the regular 3-year warranties low, the accidental tends to still run a bit high in my opinion.

Personally, I'd just baby the Envy and buy regular warranty if it's at $200 or lower. Square Trade also tends to offer decent pricing after their usual coupons.

I read their Terms & Conditions several times. What I found interesting is...if you drop or laptop or something drops on it let's say.... and it makes a nice big dent in the laptop, but the laptop still works well, then HP will not fix the cosmetic damage.

Accidental Protection only works in the case of spills, fall...yes, the laptop will have cosmetic damage, but at the same time, the laptop needs to be in a condition where it can no longer function as intended. So damage alone, no go, but damage with non functioning laptop should be covered. I think.

    This is somewhat incorrect.

Here is a quote straight from their "Pick Up and Return with Accidental Damage Protection" plan's terms.
This means that if parts are broken they should repair or replace them. This means if a part is broken they should replace it.

Things like scratches and smalls dings will likely not be covered though.

    I've had the following:
    HP 2740p, cracked screen
HP TM2, cracked screen, massive dent on screen casing and laptop

After they arrived I 'THEN' purchased ADP anf both were fixed like new within one week. But the warranty if and WHEN you need it but obviously check back monthly as HP do remove the option if the machine is no longer supported or when they feel like it (HP TM2 ADP is no longer available in the UK!)

I think if an accident happens computer would break just as easily, no matter if it is 1 day old or 3 year old.

It'll be those priceless -moments, when you trip on a carpet and see your laptop flying down the stairs.

Among other things I do damage/cost evaluations and repairs for insurance companies. I've seen many things happen to computers, old and new :D

Yesterday I dropped my own 8510w, luckily I have soft carpet in this room so no damage done. I haven't yet managed to damage my own computers enough to make insurance claim. Once my desktop's powersupply did blow and it took motherboard, cpu and ram with it. My home insurance covered that pretty much. Washing machine broke at the same time, having those two covered pretty much paid back all those years paying for home insurance fees.

I agree with you KLF. I have accidental protection on my laptop and typically anything worth more then a few hundred dollars.

I have one blanket insurance that covers pretty much everything inside my apartment walls (except things mentioned in the fine print). For ~150$ year it's pretty good. That insurance is meant for mainly against bigger damages due it has ~250$ deductible on each claim. Such a good deal that I wouldn't be without it.
