I think this is a stupid question, but I am asking anyway! :p

So I ordered this Compaq notebook through Office Depot, I ordered a v2000z. However on the top right of the screen, it is labled v2000. Why is this???

The reason for this concern, comes after checking Crucial's website for memory compatibility, and it has 2 listings ( v2000 or v2000z). It says that the memory speed is 2700 for hte v2000 and 3200 for the v2000z. What is up with this? I know (cpuz) that I am running 2700 speed memory, how do I tell what model notebook I have?

mines a V2312US but it says V2000 also. mine came with PC2700 but its working with PC3200. get the faster ram, its always backwards compatable but is should work at the faster speed with your model

You have a Turion, thus you have a V2000z.

That's right, V2000 is the Intel version, can have the Celeron or Pentium M. V2000Z is the AMD version, can have the Turion or Sempron.

But all V2000's have V2000 written above the screen. If your's has been customized by you and not a pre-built model, then it has no model number. It'll just be a V2000Z.

I was assuming that it was a difference in CPUs that distinguished the two. So why does Crucial's website list the v2000z as being able to support 3200 speed so-dimm memory??

They probably assumed it's capable of using PC3200 because the CPU and chipset are more than capable of using PC3200. Unfortunately, HP's BIOS makes using PC3200 a bit of a gamble though they're starting to get that straightened out in the latest BIOS updates. Crucial made the same wrong assumption with the zv5000z/R3000z.

Wait, so with the new bios we can use PC3200!!??!! I am about to order/replace my ram with a 1 gig stick, that would be great if I could use that speed!
