theres a deal at my office depot for a 14 inch pavilion dv2000 for $700 ($900 before rebates). it has an AMD processor 1.8Ghz, 2 gigs RAM, DVD burner, webcam, 160 gig HD.

on the surface this seems like a great deal. am i missing something? why the low price? is this model completely outdated?

its low because the dv2500 series laptops are out, that laptop is still fast but it dosent have the newest parts like the dv2500 including the intel santa rosa processors and the nvidia 8400m dedicated graphics card which supports direct x10 the 2500 has the new radiance imprint and a fingerprint reader on select models

Not completely outdated, infact the AMD versions are still current and for some odd reason HP stopped sellng the AMD version through their website a couple of months ago. There might be an update in the future but its probably a few months away. Until then the dv2000z series is still current version.

As for as the Intel based dv2000t, they received a minor mid life update with the Santa Rosa platform and was renamed as the dv2500t.

Do you think that the DV2000 is a good deal for $700?

I'm in the same boat and looking to spend not more than $800 for a laptop. I also don't want anything larger than 14" screen. Thank you

It's still basically the same idea in terms of the case design/functionality, just named slightly different for the sake of making it easier to tell what uses Santa Rosa and what doesn't.

I have one, and I posted a review of it. The case and everything is identical, other than the fact that the dv25000t is a Santa Rosa platform, and has a better graphics card.

The prices are falling because they are made more cheaply and outsourced.. made not in the US or Japan. The laptop looks good with those specs. HP also has to clear their inventory for the new ones that's coming out.

Yeah, for what you're getting with it (2G Ram, 160, Burner) I'd say it's a great deal. If you're a gamer you will be disappointed, but IMO I think desktops are the way to go if you're in that boat anyway.

Is that AMD an x2 dual core? Definitely a great deal then.

Outdated? sort of, but that really depends on what you're doing with it. for everything short of gaming/multi media editing, it's just fine.
