My cd tray pops open randomly throughout the day. any one else have this problem? trying to tshoot whether it's a vista problem or a DV7 issue.
the battery charges VERY slowly and the brick gets very hot.
could this be b/c it is an 8 cell battery? Battery life is decent and i'm charging it mostly while in use. could this be why it takes forever to charge?
appreciate any tips or help.

There's probably a problem with the manual eject mechanism that is causing the drive to think that you have pressed it when you actually haven't. I would ask HP support to send you a replacement DVD drive. They are very easy to swap out.
I don't believe the 8 cell battery or hot power supply have much to do with it. It's normal for a power supply to get quite hot and an 8 cell battery can take hours to charge to full capacity, especially if you are using the laptop while that is happening. -
thx cjcerny. I'll give HP a call then. i wanted to make sure it wasn't a vista problem first.
i just hate calling bombay though. last time i called them for the atheros driver not being found, they wiped the drive. luckily i hadn't loaded anything on here. -
Hahaha I had the same problem with my old HP Pavilion laptop's CD drive, it popped out randomly. I had to call HP and have them replace it.

i contacted their support and they had me delete the upper/lower registers with a dougknox.com utility and reinstall the drivers.
what's weird is when i rebooted one of my gadgets was gone. a stock ticker.
i added the stock ticker to my gadgets and the drive popped open again.
going to leave the gadget off for a day and see if that cures the problem.
if not, tsupport said it would be a drive replacement.
anyone have trouble with their replacement drives? i know they are refurbished.
also, anyone have dismantle pics of how to replace the drive?
appreciate it! -
This is not your model but I'd guess it's much the same one screw to take out . Remove the optical drive

thank you SPQR! i'm holding off a bit to see if the problem persists.
i noticed today when i clicked on the HP backup partition the door opened, so i went ahead and made the backup discs that HP's Total care advisor software kept reminding me to do. i'll see if that stops it.
if not, i'll swap out the drive with HP.
appreciate it
omg i just watched the video how to get to the heat sink. LOL you have to dismantle the whole **** thing!
oh man i used to clean my acer fan annually. it was real easy to get to.
just a couple HP DV7 issues
