My keyboard frequently doesn't accept keystrokes so that I have to duplicate keystrokes. This most often happens with the space bar. Also, every once in a while, maybe 5 times a day, a keystroke will get "stuck." The key physically comes up, but the computer continues sending the key to the software over and over until another key is pressed. So I end up with sentences like:

    The quick brown foxxxxxxxxxxxx

and have to backspace and fix the error. It happened once while I was typing this, and I had to duplicate about 10 keystrokes while typing this. This happens both on the notebook's keyboard AND with an external keyboard. In fact, I used an external USB keyboard to type this post.

Any idea if this is a known issue or if this can be fixed either by me or by HP?

Also, when I plug in headphones, the sound still comes out of the speakers instead of the headphones.

Sounds like a lemon product to me. Do call HP's call center when you get an hour of free time.
DV6000 is supposed not to have the infamous keyboard problems, so it seems like it's just your laptop. In any case, try updating the BIOS (hp's drivers page).

There's an audio driver update to fix the headphones problem on hp.com.

Don't know what's up with the keyboard. Odd that the USB keyboard does the same thing, that suggests a software problem? Might want to do the usual virus/worm/spyware sweep, just to be thorough.

Thanks, do you happen to know if there is a driver for Linux?

Don't know, but I'd be surprised if a current Linux distro didn't detect it. I'm partial to 64-bit Fedora Core. I've been meaning to replace my dv9008nr's recovery partition with FC6 (about the right size, 12GB?) but haven't had a good enough excuse to try it yet.
