Press the NumLock key to disable the embedded numeric keypad. This may be an option in the BIOS and it is on by default.

as ratsey told u...... if u look carefully on the keyboard u can see that near J u can see a 1 near K u can see 2. these are provided on the keyboard beacuse it is missing the conventional number pad found on traditional keyboards. since they have to make laptop keyboards small they avoid this part. instead what they have given is this alternate numpad which u can activate with 'Fn' key or numlock key or scroll lock key (depending on manufacturer). u press Fn+J u get 1.
some manufacturers provide an option in bios to lock the Fn key fuction using 'scroll lock' or 'num lock'. this must have been activated in your case when u updated the bios or if u messed with it. your current options are
1. press scroll lock or num lock
2. go to bios. find the option that says activate 'Fn' on scroll lock and disable it.
as far as i can see there is no need to downgrade the bios (i dont know if that is possible ) -
