i was just using my laptop to browse the internet and the laptop just all of a sudden shuts down without the windows shut down sequence. i couldn't turn it back on until i remove the battery, held the power button, put back the battery and it could turn back on. it was not overheating or anything. what could be the problem?

    Hi.

It sound like overheating, even though you said it was not, by the way it took some time before the notebook would start-up.

Have you tried a temp monitoring program try, hwmonitor.

Also get a can of Air Duster and clean your fans and exhaust vent.

    Regards

    John.

it is not overheating. there was nothing heating up that i could feel. the fans were blowing out cool air so i don't think it is overheating.

    Hi.

Could it have been a BSOD, if you looked away for a second, that's all it takes, but normally the notebook would re-boot, not shut-down.

    Regards

    John.

That doesn't mean it's not overheating, but I don't think it is in this case. Ensure that your system is being charged when plugged in, your battery may have become undercharged, which could be from a poor connection on the part of the battery, or perhaps a broken power jack... or both.

it was on battery power and the battery has about 80% charge. i was able to turn it back on after taking out the battery, holding the power button and putting the battery back

    Hi.

How long have you had the battery the gauge might be giving a false reading!

    John.

i know my dv5t has had some sort of flaw in it, from the day i received it. shut it down properly, and then i would start it back up and it would shut down right after the HP logo shows its face. it's dead now, i've done the batteryHolddownthepowerbuttonforaminuteTRICK, and no dice.. i'm sending it back in.
