I've seen lots of posts about laptops that won't start but none with the exact same problem as me. When I press the power button it lights up and it sounds like it's going to turn on but nothing happens. There's nothing on the screen. It sounds like it used to if you closed the lid while it was on. Just that quiet hum. It never progresses to anything else. I've been on Compaq's website and I've done everything they suggested - removing the battery, reseating the memory...
Any suggestions? I can follow instructions but I'm not very tech smart so dumb down any answers for me.
    Thanks for any help.

Hi. It's a Presario CQ50. Besides the power button, the wireless button lights up but it's red and it doesn't turn blue when I push it. I don't think the hard disk is running, just the fan.

I know it's from 2008 but is it still in warranty by any chance?

Have you tried re-seating the ram and the HDD?

No, the warranty has expired and I have tried reseating the RAM, I don't think the HDD. How would I do that?

Thanks for the link. I did that but no change. Anything else I could try or is it time to give up?

Hmm if the HDD isn't running at all then you might have a dead laptop. :-/ Considering it isn't POST'ing at all...

Let wait and see if anyone else have an idea. Sometimes it's hard to tell when you don't have physical access to the notebook unfortunately.
