If you are hearing a loud clicking, that generally means that the Hard Drive has completely failed (hope you backed your stuff up). Now, if the computer isn't even loaded the quick HP blue screen bios before it restarts, then you are talking about something being wrong with the motherboard more than likely. Most of the time a MOBO failure is due to either accidental damage or a power surge when the laptop was plugged in charging.

If you have a spare hard drive, try switching that out and see if it boots to a black screen where it states no O.S. and give you the option to reboot. If it does that, then it is the hard drive.

Yes and No. It depends on what warranty you have whether it is the standard one or an extended coverage one. Also, it depends on when you bought it and if you are still inside your warranty.

Assuming the above is correct, then yes, you should be covered.

Yes, you can recover your data. Just take the hard drive out and hook it up to another laptop or use a usb 2.5 inch external hard drive case to hook the hdd up to another pc in the same manner as a camera or mp3 player).

First thing I would do to see if the laptop is really dead is take out your wifi (may be causing a short). then try and turn it on...If not, reseat your memory (may have became loose) then start unpluging everthing else (cd/dvd drive...) until you figure out what is resulting in the short.

Hopefully one of these is your problem. It is also possible you are overheating...It only takes seconds to over heat. Usually cleaning out your fan and applying new termal paste to your cpu will fix this problem.

Then you are definitely covered. I used to work for Best Buy. You can try what Jayson recommended if you are comfortable with it, or you can just take it in. Just know that if you turn it in for repair, it may be a while before you get it back because typically this is a problem that they send your laptop off to one of their major clean room repair facilities on.

Sounds like the usual faulty NVIDIA chipset. Wireless usually breaks first, then the motherboard completely fails. There's a BIOS update that runs the fan 24x7 to help prevent these failures but I doubt anywhere near a majority of users have flashed it in. More here:

But since you have that nice expensive extended warranty you might as well make use of that.

The new dv4z/5z/7z notebooks use AMD (ATI) chipsets. Much better.

omg, I am having a similar problem and I don't have the nice expensive extended warranty. You guys sound like you know what you're talking about, I'd love some advice.

I have a TX1000z HP laptop and it stopped booting up a couple of days ago. The power lights flicker on and then shut off after just a second or so...I don't get any clicks - just nothing - on then off. I contacted HP and they gave me direction to try resetting the memory module by lifting out the memory cards and putting them back in - didn't do a thing. Any other suggestions? or am I just out the $1000???
