I was using my laptop on vacation, and it was functioning perfectly.
The next time I tried to turn on, (battery power) it would not.
I plugged it in, and it would still not turn on. Then I took out the
battery, and then it booted fine. I put the battery back in (while
it was still running, and the battery would charge. I could then unplug
the machine, and it would stay powered. When I shut down, Im back to where I need to take out the battery to turn it on.
It was this way for a couple days. Then it started having trouble turning on
with the battery out also. It kept getting worse and worse. I can sometimes get it to turn on now, but rarely anymore. It sometimes turns on, and shuts off as it boots. (looses power)
It seems to me to be a power issue of some sort. When I get it to
turn on, it works perfectly. I can put the battery in (when its running)
and all is well. But like I said, it now rarely turns on.
Help me, and thanks for looking

Here are some suggestions if you are able to get the notebook turned on and connected to the internet...

    1. Click the link below and run HP System Check
    2. Under the Hardware Diags Tab run the Battery Health Check

If the battery checks out ok, then you will likely need a systemboard replacement. The only other cause I can think of would be a frayed ac adapter.

    thanks for the help.

    That sounds bad :(

The battery seems fine, ....after I get it to boot, and plug it back in.
It will charge and I can then unplug the ac and run on battery power.

Like now, ...I know the battery is charged 100% and it still wont boot
    from the battery.

I know very little about laptop costs, is it feasible to replace the motherboard? Ive built several desktops, is laptop repair very much tougher?

    thanks again

The motherboard is a costly replacement for all notebooks, and it is normally just better to purchase a new notebook. Some cheaper ones, however can be found on the Internet and on ebay.

However, before assuming that, check all the battery contacts. Make sure that all the terminals of the battery make a good, solid connection with the terminals on the notebook.

    thanks,

the battery makes good contact, after a get it to boot with
    the ac.

It sucks because when it boots, it works perfectly :(
