is this normal? its very uncomfortable when playing games.. are you guys experiencing the same?
-
Unfortunately, it is normal. The hard drive is located under that palmrest and is pretty much the warmest part of the laptop in terms of the surface. What you could do is direct a little fan in that area, I've tried it, and it helps immensly. That's how all HP Pavilion laptops always been.
It's the material they use, they really conduct the heat and puts it on the surface. -

HP+flashy cases=Hot temps Unfortunately, most HP laptops are like that. I used to have one myself, but I sold it because of that.
-
It's normal...according to tech support which is why mine is going back. I even got the Nvidia 9200 to minimize the heat issue identified in the original review but to no avail. Not too impressed with battery life as all that extra heat means wasted electron from the battery.
-
Battery life isn't too bad iove. I have a T9400 2.53 Ghz and 9600m GT with a 6 cell high capacity and am getting almost 3 hours on PowerSaver mode with the screen all the way up and wireless on. But that's with Microsoft Word and Internet Explorer on. That isn't too bad at all.
quatrei, if you enable the fan to "always on" in the BIOS, I think that could make a slight difference with the heat on the left palm rest.
Overall, I am super happy with my HP. If you want, Toshiba laptops don't get hot on the palm rest or the keyboard. My dad has one and his laptop doesn't really get warm even on the highest setting except for the bottom of the notebook.
Heat is what you get when the notebook is built to be as thin as possible and with looks in mind. Unfortunately HP has not learned from using the same materials as the dv6000 series...they use the same type of plastic...they should have used something that does not conduct heat. -
Wow! I have the P8600 with extended battery and undervolting but I only get 2:30 while surfing internet and not even 2:00 with bluray. Kinda sucks if I want to watch a movie on a plane. I'm considering a LED back lit for the replacement...but thats a topic for another thread...
-
Actually the LED will only give you about 15 minutes or so, but I think they have 12-cell available now. So maybe you could pair up the LED with a 12-cell and a 9200m gs. That should do the trick. Keep the CPU (P8600). The dv4t is a good portable size.
-
Always on? Man you're lucky if your HP has that option in the bios... I wish my DV2500 had that.
-
Yea, it's a new feature for these dv4, dv5, dv7, and all new lineups. Yea, it would be nice if HP udated the BIOS for your dv2000 series...I'm sure they can, but probably won't. Check for a new BIOS nu D.

my fan is already set to always on..but its irritating on my left hand when it gets really warm..

Hi.
Replacing a hdd is quite simple it will be under a panel on the bottom of you notebook , a couple of screw.
But you need a OS disk and drivers before you start.
You can find out by downloading hdd tune, it will also give the hdd temperature.

Fans won't matter, there's no active cooling in that area. I don't know how it is for everyone else, but my wireless card sits right there by the HDD and the touchpad. That makes the palm rest hotter on the left side. My right side HDD idles at 6c less than my primary drive on the left side. There's simply not much to be done about it unless you want to add extra venting to the HDD cover on that side. The drives are identical 320 gig WD 5400 RPM Drives. Right side idles at 29c, left side idles at 35c.

so i guess changing hrddrives wont make much of a difference..
-
FWIW on my CQ45 it's still warmer on the left side even without a hard drive installed. So I think it's more than just the hard disk.
On the left side the wireless card is mounted on the bottom, furthest left, next to the hard drive. There is also a blue tooth module that is connected directly to the underside of the left hand palm rest and that's where it seems hottest even though I'm not specifically using it and on the mainboard below that is a modem board.
On the right hand side is just a small connector board, for audio and IR, and the optical drive.
IMHO, for this model, changing to a lower power hard drive may help a little, but the left hand side will always be warmer regardless. Except when the machine is turned off of course. -
