I've been loosing backlight adjustment control on dv5z running windows 7. If I restart a PC it comes back. All other buttons using combination of FN key + Fx seem to work fine. Also I can manually set the brightness by going to power profile but not using FN+F7 or FN+F8. Any idea what's causing this? I have 10.6 Catalyst installaed with the latest driver from AMD web site.

1st to try: download latest Quick Launch Buttons driver from HP website, uninstall current QLB, restart, install new QLB, restart and cross fingers.

6730b, thanks for the advice. I've done some more testing and discovered that if laptop goes to sleep or hibernate modes as soon as it wakes up it will loose the ability to control backlight. I've tried reinstalling quicklunch buttons driver (which btw is only available for Vista 64bit, not Windows 7) and nothing changed. I remember intially I had a problem getting all functions on the remote control to work and installing the quick lunch buttons driver the first time didn't help, though after reinstall it worked fine (only certain buttons were not functional).
Another weird thing is that now the brightness contol is gone (if I click on the battery icon and pick adjust brightness, the slider is no longer there). -
It can be difficult to fix sometimes, been trough it on some hp's (but no specific dv5 experience).

led or cf backlighting and how old is the machine??
-
laptop is year and a half old. CF display, it's not a hardware issue but software/driver.
Sometimes Brightness control goes away from power options. I haven't really pay much attention as to when it happens.
Another quick access to brightness is to use combination of windows + X buttons. Though if brighness isn't available in power options it is also not available with this shortcut.
I like windows 7 but the lack of normal brightness support simply kills the experience. -
For quick lunch buttons I've tried both sp44777.exe and sp45889.exe (available as vista 64-bit download). Sp44777 doesn't list dv5 as compatible model (according to hp release notes), though it works just fine.

I had the same problem with my dv7 and it turned out to be the ati 10.6 drivers. Try and install the new 10.7 drivers and see if the backlight works again.

Yes, after trying the qlb, next is a careful reinstall of other drivers.

Good luck, and tell us how it went, as the cure for the brightness controls can be of interest to many. -
Thanks a lot guys. -
