Hello everyone i was considering purchasing an external dvd burner. I needed something fast 16x but the prices varied from 150-250 and higher. I solved my problem. I purchases a case and then purchased a internal 16x burner and there i got my external 16x burner for less than that $100. Let me know if that was a good idea please.

Test it out, see if it works. 16x burning on a 4200RPM laptop drive will not probably not be possible.

What if you run it from a 7200 External Firewire Drive?
Dell Inspiron 6000
1.6 GHZ Centrino (Sonoma)
WUXGA 15.4" WS
512 MB RAM
60 GB HD
Wireless B/G

Mozilla Firefox Browser

Still think you are not going to be able to get the data off fast enough for a 16x burn. 8x might be tough too. I've known people with 8x drives in boxes with 5400 drives that had issues.

But how would computers be able to handle 16x drives then? Like if my computer had a 5400RPM drive and a 16x burner, would the hard drive be fast enough to burn at 16x?

Buffers are on the drives themselves and cannot be changed. It is all about how fast you can get data off the drive. When buring at 16x, you are laying down data at over 20MB per second. A 4200RPM drive cannot do that. There is nothing wrong burning at a lower speed. You might get it to work at 8x with a 5400RPM drive. I would rather have a 4x quality burn than a 16x piece of garbage.

I was actually referring to Nero's UltraBuffer tab in Nero's preferences. If you have Nero installed (I have v6.0.0.11), and go to 'File - Properties...', click on the 'Ultrabuffer' tab, you are able to set a secondary memory buffer that, along with the drive's own hardware buffer, allows high speed burns to be more reliable. The max setting here is 80MB's, more than enough to handle a 16x burn.
Now if only my own memory were in better shape . . .

I seriously doubt you can do a 16x burn on a laptop drive. I've seen usb drives that had problems connected to a desktop with a 7200RPM drive, ultrabuffer or no. Maybe I'm wrong. I guess thechemist is going to find out.

ok, so even the 7K60 can't handle a 16x burn? If not then i think i better save some money and buy a 8x external burner.

Hey guys burnt some movies with the burner at 4x speed and it was flawless. Would never think of burning at 16x but i got that burner since i can take it out of the case and insert in my pc at home and the cost was really good.
made my own external dvd burner
