    Hi All

My (ex) laptop model is presario R3340US. It had died - when I took it to the local repair center, I was told the video (which is soldered) has died and that is why the mainboard needs replacement. When I contacted HP, the price quoted
    was about $580.

I have already bought another laptop. Still, I would like to make the old one work again. Any idea how to go about it please, thanks !

Sorry to say it but I'm afraid you're sitting with a brick in your lap. There are only tree routes you can take, fork over $580 to HP or take it to a computer with REAL expert that might have the skills to repair computer components. That won't be cheap either. The third option is looking for mainboard on ebay and the net, buy one and perhaps change it yourself.

So either way you will be paying a good chunk of money. What I would do it contact my home insurance company, pay them $150 euro or what ever they charge you, and let them pay for the repair or replacement.

Odds are that one of the video memory chips has gone bad, or at least the solder attaching it to the motherboard. It's a common problem in that generation of HP/Compaq machines. It's fixable, someone like ikenfixit.com can do it, but you're probably better off selling the notebook as broken on eBay (after you've removed and/or wiped the HD of course).

Well, you are about right. In all probability, one of the memory chip has gone bad as told to me by the repair guys. Looks bad luck to me :-(
