I just ordered a r3000z notebook computer with 256 MB Ram. I plan to buy additional aftermarket. I don't seem to be able to find a concensus on the appropriate memory modeule. Does it take a DDR PC2700 or PC3200? I want have the additional memort ready to instal when I receive my computer.

    Thanks, Bill

    According to Crucial.com, it's 200pin PC3200 SODIMM memory.

It comes with PC2700 RAM, but PC3200 was safer before HP fixed the memory incompatibility issues in their BIOS. Unless PC2700 is dramatically cheaper, buy PC3200.

Also note that you can only get to one of the two SODIMM slots easily. The other one is under the keyboard. It's not too big a deal to get to but it's certainly inconvenient. Just so you know.

I know its different question. But who can tell me about Kingston branded memory. It is more expensive that regular PC2700 RAM value ram
    Does it make a difference?

    Thanks

Here's a better deal then Crucial. Get the 1gb kit of pc3200.
$141.99 is a good price. Crucial wants $251.98. Cheaper?

Those are desktop DIMMs. Kingston says to use these for the zv5000z/R3000z:

    http://www.ec.kingston.com/shop/partsinfo.asp?ktcpartno=KTH-ZD7000/512

$140 apiece. Even their regular parts are $124:

    http://www.ec.kingston.com/shop/PartsInfo.asp?ktcpartno=KVR400X64SC3A/512

I don't know what the difference is. Crucial recommends their standard PC3200 parts:

So Crucial is cheaper than Kingston. OTOH, you can get Corsair XMS-series PC3200 for $107:

If you are going to do a max upgrade to 2G's DO NOT use Kingmax PC2700. According to the specs it should work, but it gives blue screens at 1.2 (1G stick in the ez slot) and won't even boot if both slots have a 1G. I suspect that the smaller 256 or maybe even 512 modules work fine at PC2700, but if you want to max the RAM it is wise to go with PC3200.[xx(]

It'd be wise to avoid Kingmax entirely. Way too many problem reports.

Ignore what I said about Corsair XMS RAM before, they work in some Athlon 64 notebooks but not HP/Compaq. Keep it simple and stick with Crucial/Micron and Kingston. I can never keep straight the rest of the brands that work (and which speed grades).

    http://www.tomshardware.com/motherboard/20040602/memory_modules-24.html

This is a review of many Athlon64 motherboards with many brands of memory by Tomshardware. As I have always said, bios makes the difference when it comes to memory.

As you can see by the chart, the same memory that works in one 64 motherboard won't work in another.

HP is content to just have a few memory brands work in their notebooks.

Yes, and Crucial is the only brand with no red flags in the Tom's Hardware review. Kingmax is a sea of red and failed many of the stress tests on the next page.
