Isn't it MUTED in Sound setup? Can you use it in some sort of messenger? What do you see in Device Manager then?

in the device manager i see the realtek high definition audio driver nothing mentioned about mic
and under recording devices i see the mic and it says that its working. i tried to test it with msn messenger it couldnt reconise any sound.
i've updated the driver of the realtek audio from realtek website, and same problem

I guess it might be disconnected from the system board...(Maybe HP Staff forgot to plug it in a socket). Do you really have it installed in your screen panel?

    I had the opposite problem.
Plugged in a mic and it didn't work.
Didn't want to shout at the laptop....wanted to use a mic instead.

Well I must admit I find this forum quit lacking in so called experts.
Here is the solution to the plug in mic not working....not the origianl post but maybe it will lead in the right direction.
For the mic jack to workdo the following:
    1. Right click on the Realtec speaker icon in the system tray
    2. Select "Sound Manager"
    3. In the upper righthand corner select "Device Advanced Settings"...not super obvious.
    4. Select the second radio button "Separate all input jacks...."
You shoul be good to go.
I did right click on the grey system icon in the system tray prior to doing this and disabled the recording device but that may have had nothing to do with solving the issue.
I can't believe this hasn't come up before. Now I need to solve my bluetooth A2DP audio issue with my S9......not likely to get a response here.

    Did you check the properties?
There is a way to get it working.

I don't have this icon in my computer. Maybe this issue is a hardware problem that cannot be solved.

I did it. I will try to download the realtek driver.
